Description
The Commercial Junior Lead Installer supports the Commercial Lead Installer and may independently oversee a small crew under the guidance of a Field Supervisor or the Director Commercial Operations. This hands-on role includes installing solar systems, ensuring site safety, reading technical plans, and assisting with on-site coordination. Designed as a growth-oriented position, it provides opportunities to develop the skills and experience needed to advance into a full Lead Installer role.
Responsibilities & Essential Functions
Installation & Technical Work
  • Perform commercial solar system installations, including module mounting, racking assembly, wiring, and equipment setup.
  • Read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and installation diagrams accurately.
  • Safely operate power tools, ladders, and other equipment in accordance with company and OSHA standards.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe job site.

Safety & Compliance
  • Participate in job hazard analyses and daily safety talks.
  • Follow and enforce Site Safety Plans.
  • Promote and enforce OSHA standards, fall protection, PPE use, and other safe work practices.
  • Identify and escalate safety risks or concerns on-site.

Leadership Development & Communication
  • Assist the Commercial Lead Installer in coordinating daily tasks, monitoring crew progress, and ensuring quality standards.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to less experienced installers.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, crew members, and stakeholders regarding project status and challenges.

Other Duties
  • Other duties and tasks as assigned by management.

Skills/Qualifications
Experience
  • 1+ years of PV solar installation experience (required).
  • 2+ years of commercial construction experience (preferred).
  • Experience installing ground-mounted (preferred) and rooftop (required) solar (ballasted, attached, metal roofs, etc.).
  • Experience running job hazard analyses (Site Safety Plans) and/or daily safety talks.
  • Experience working with hand tools and power tools (required; employees may be required to provide a basic toolkit).

Technical Proficiency
  • Understanding of AC/DC systems and junction boxes
  • Understanding of inverters (string, string optimizers, micro inverters depending on project type)
  • Understanding of racking systems (Unirac, SnapNRack, etc.)
  • Ability to read blueprints and/or installation diagrams.

Core Skills
  • Must complete, acquire, and maintain Registered Unlicensed Electrician registration (required).
  • Comfortable climbing ladders and working on rooftops.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA safety standards
  • Fall protection, lockout/tagout, PPE enforcement
  • Basic leadership abilities and willingness to grow into a lead role.
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and organization skills.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Must successfully complete and clear an MVR (motor vehicle report) background screen.
  • Complete, obtain, and maintain DOT (Department of Transportation) Medical Certification (preferred).

Physical Requirements
  • Comfortable working extended hours in extreme environments/climate (cold, heat, wind, etc) (frequent).
  • Prolonged periods of walking, standing, and lifting (frequent).
  • Must be able to lift, push, and pull up to 50-75 lbs. at a time (frequent).
  • Must be able to transport and drive for short and long distances for work related events/job sites and be able to travel with crew for occasional overnight, or multiple night, trips within our service area (MN, WI, IA, SD, ND, NE).

Compensation & Benefits
  • This is a full-time non-exempt hourly (overtime eligible) position with an hourly rate of $24.00 - $28.00 (depending on experience and qualifications)
  • PTO accrual per hour will be .03847, up to 80 hours annually (120 hours annually after year 1).
