SUMMARY: The Project Engineer II is responsible for providing a higher level of technical coordination on project tasks in support of the Project Manager for substation construction projects. This role supports the execution of medium- to high-voltage electrical infrastructure work, including substations and related systems. The Project Engineer II has limited customer and field interaction. This is an exempt position that is an individual contributor and will be temporarily positioned on a project site. This role is an on-site position which requires the ability to travel to our project sites in CA, NV, and AZ.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide project engineering support to Project Managers with minimal supervisory direction.
  • Formulate project schedules based on estimated hours, electrical tasks, project milestones, resource leveling, Project Manager Guidelines and project criteria.
  • Review substation project plans and specifications for completeness and accuracy.
  • Coordinate Tier-Subcontractor scheduling with Baker Electric Project Foremen.
  • Discuss utility interconnection, substation construction, supply, or project-related issues with interdepartmental personnel, field forces, utilities, engineering firms, contractors, developers, manufacturers, and distributors.
  • Evaluate all Requests for Information (RFIs) and call attention to areas of need.
  • Analyze supplier and subcontractor submittals and shop drawings (including single line diagrams, protection and control systems, relay panels, transformers, and switchgear) for conformance to project documents.
  • Organize and follow up on the submittal process ensuring project deadlines are adhered to.
  • Create and issue the Subcontractors' contracts with oversight of Project Manager.
  • Assemble bills of material (BOMs) for substation components and coordinate with the Project Manager to finalize purchase orders.
  • Review, identify potential mistakes, and process change order requests.
  • Assist in the identification and implementation of value-engineering and pre-fabrication opportunities.
  • Develop project change order estimates and proposals at the direction of the Project Manager or Estimator.
  • Perform all processes and procedures that support the project close out phase.
  • Participates in meetings for project specific scheduling, budgeting, and planning with supervisors. Assists with two-week look ahead.
  • Attend on-site project meetings with Project Managers when appropriate.

EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION:
  • 1-2 years of electrical Project Engineer and/or combined electrical estimating experience, preferably in substation, utility, or heavy electrical infrastructure projects
  • Bachelor's Degree in Construction Management, Electrical Engineering, or related degree or successful graduation of an electrical training program
  • Basic understanding of substation systems, including high-voltage equipment, protection & control, and utility standards preferred
  • Proficiency in MS Office / O365 applications
  • Familiarity with project management and estimating software
  • Proven ability to understand and analyze electrical terminology, drawings, theory, etc. is required including one-line diagrams and substation layouts.
  • Proven ability to communicate with clients, utilities, and project stakeholders in a professional manner in-person

The starting salary for this opportunity range is listed. Other rewards may include annual bonus eligibility based on company and individual performance, short- and long-term incentives, and program-specific awards.
