How much do solar film jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 1, 2026, the average yearly pay for solar film in the United States is $132,389.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $77,500.00 and $144,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Solar Film Installer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Solar Film Installer, you need a solid understanding of window film application techniques, basic construction or glazing knowledge, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with specialized tools like squeegees, heat guns, and utility knives, as well as manufacturer-specific installation guidelines and safety certifications, is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong customer service skills help installers deliver high-quality results and handle client interactions effectively. These competencies ensure efficient, safe installations that meet client expectations and industry standards.

What are some common challenges faced by technicians installing solar film, and how can they be addressed?

Technicians installing solar film often encounter challenges such as working with large glass surfaces, ensuring a dust-free environment, and achieving a bubble-free finish. Weather conditions, like excessive heat or wind, can also complicate installation. To address these issues, it's essential to work in a controlled environment when possible, use proper cleaning techniques, and follow best practices for film application. Collaborating closely with team members ensures safety and efficiency, especially during large-scale projects. Ongoing training and attention to detail can further help technicians deliver high-quality results.

What are solar film installers?

Solar film installers are professionals who apply thin layers of photovoltaic or heat-reducing film to windows, primarily in homes, offices, or vehicles. These films help reduce energy costs by blocking UV rays, minimizing heat gain, and sometimes generating electricity through solar energy. Installers measure, cut, and carefully apply the film to ensure a bubble-free, smooth finish. They may also advise clients on the best type of solar film to meet their energy-saving or privacy needs.

What is the difference between Solar Film vs Solar Installer?

AspectSolar FilmSolar Installer
Primary RoleApplying solar films to windows and surfaces to reduce heat and glareInstalling solar panels on rooftops or ground mounts to generate electricity
Required SkillsSurface preparation, film application techniques, safety proceduresElectrical wiring, mounting systems, safety protocols
CertificationsNone typically required, but safety training beneficialElectrical licenses, NABCEP certification often preferred
Work EnvironmentIndoor and outdoor surface applicationOutdoor installation on buildings or ground

While both roles are part of the solar industry, Solar Film specialists focus on applying films to surfaces to improve energy efficiency and comfort, whereas Solar Installers handle the physical setup of solar panel systems to generate electricity. Both require safety awareness, but Solar Installers often need electrical certifications, making their roles distinct yet complementary in solar energy projects.

Job description

R&D Scientist

San Carlos, California, United States

About the Company

At Swift Solar, our mission is to unlock the full potential of solar energy. We believe that solar energy has vast untapped potential to power our lives, fuel economies, and strengthen supply chains, while protecting planetary health in the face of global climate change. The reality is that today's solar technology is good, but not good enough.

Swift Solar is making solar better with its breakthrough tandem technology that harnesses the power of perovskite materials to create solar solutions that are not only more efficient than traditional technology but also more versatile, enabling applications ranging from space solar to utility-scale power generation.

Swift Solar is a mission-focused startup supported by the US government and backed by world-class investors. It's a long journey to bring a new clean energy technology to market, and we're in it for the long haul, together. Join our extraordinary team building the cutting-edge solar technology that will shape the future of the global solar industry.

A Day in the Life

Swift Solar's R&D team is at the forefront of development of efficient, stable, and manufacturing-ready perovskite tandem solar cells. As an R&D Scientist at Swift Solar, you will drive the development of processes, metrology, and materials for key thin film layers in the solar cell stack. The work will emphasize independently identifying shortcomings within the existing device stack and its constituent layers, followed by the independent development of strategies to overcome these limitations. You will perform systematic and statistically backed experiments to develop and optimize scalable deposition materials and processes in collaboration with other engineers/scientists and technicians at Swift Solar. You will develop and use advanced metrology techniques to quantify the resulting materials properties. Success in this role will require ownership of continued maintenance, upkeep, and training of critical deposition and characterization processes. This work will feed into developing advanced solar cell stacks for efficiency, long-term stability, and scalability to gigawatt-level manufacturing, and will involve developing unit process specifications for thin film materials and processes to reach high reproducibility. Your input will be crucial to its translation to high-volume manufacturing. You might also work with chemical suppliers to source and qualify materials for manufacturing, and design new materials to achieve higher performance, stability, or scalability.

As an early hire, you'll help craft Swift Solar's culture. In this role you'll be interacting with every part of the company, which will naturally lead to many opportunities to grow your own skills and responsibilities. We encourage you to take full advantage of these opportunities.
