What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Solar Field Service Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Solar Field Service Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical or mechanical engineering, knowledge of photovoltaic (PV) systems, and often a relevant degree or certification (such as NABCEP). Familiarity with diagnostic tools, solar monitoring software, and safety protocols is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and the ability to work independently or in small teams help you excel in this field. These competencies ensure the safe, efficient maintenance and troubleshooting of solar installations, maximizing system uptime and client satisfaction.

What does a Solar Field Service Engineer do?

A Solar Field Service Engineer is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of solar power systems at various sites. They ensure that solar panels and related equipment operate efficiently and safely, often working both independently and as part of a team. Their duties may include conducting site inspections, performing preventive maintenance, diagnosing system faults, and replacing defective components. Solar Field Service Engineers also provide technical support to customers and may help with system upgrades or expansions. The role requires strong technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and a solid understanding of electrical and mechanical systems.

What is the difference between Solar Field Service Engineer vs Solar Installation Technician?

Core Experience (Utility-Scale Required)

  • 3+ years of utility-scale solar experience (solar farms / ground-mount systems)
  • Experience leading crews or acting as lead tech on-site
  • Experience working on megawatt-scale PV systems (NOT residential rooftop solar)
  • Strong electrical troubleshooting and repair skills (inverters, DC systems, power electronics)
  • Experience with solar O&M / maintenance work
  • Working knowledge of OSHA / NFPA 70E safety standards
  • Experience using multimeters, meggers, amp clamps, and testing equipment
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office)

Physical / Work Environment
