Solar Design Internship information

What is a solar design internship?

A Solar Design Internship is an entry-level position where students or recent graduates gain hands-on experience in the planning and designing of solar energy systems. Interns typically work under the supervision of experienced engineers or designers to assist with site assessments, create layout plans using design software, and help prepare technical documentation. This role helps interns develop practical skills in renewable energy technology, project management, and industry-standard tools. Such internships are valuable for building a foundation in the fast-growing solar energy sector and can lead to full-time opportunities in the field.

What are the typical responsibilities of a solar design intern?

As a Solar Design Intern, you'll typically assist in creating and reviewing solar system layouts, performing site assessments, and preparing technical documentation using design software such as AutoCAD or PVsyst. You may also support senior engineers by gathering data, conducting shading analyses, and helping with permitting processes. Your work ensures designs are both efficient and compliant with regulations, directly contributing to the timely and successful execution of solar projects. This collaborative environment offers valuable exposure to engineering best practices and the renewable energy industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a solar design intern?

To thrive as a Solar Design Intern, you need a basic understanding of renewable energy systems, electrical engineering concepts, and proficiency in drafting or design, often supported by enrollment in a relevant engineering or technical degree. Familiarity with design software such as AutoCAD, PVsyst, and Microsoft Office, as well as knowledge of solar modeling tools, is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help interns excel in collaborating with teams and solving practical design challenges. These skills are crucial for creating accurate solar project plans that meet client needs and comply with industry standards.

What is the difference between Solar Design Internship vs Solar Design Engineer?

AspectSolar Design InternshipSolar Design Engineer
CredentialsTypically pursuing or recent graduate in engineering, architecture, or related fieldBachelor’s or Master’s degree in engineering, architecture, or related field; professional licensure often preferred
Work EnvironmentInternship setting, often in renewable energy companies or engineering firmsFull-time professional role, often in design teams or project management
ResponsibilitiesAssisting with design calculations, site assessments, and learning project workflowsCreating detailed solar system designs, performing site analysis, and overseeing project implementation

The Solar Design Internship provides hands-on learning experience for students or recent graduates, focusing on assisting with design tasks. In contrast, the Solar Design Engineer is a full-time role requiring more experience and responsibility in designing and managing solar projects. Both roles are essential in the solar industry, but they differ mainly in experience level and scope of work.

Job description

Redwire is accelerating humanity's expansion into space by delivering reliable, economical and sustainable infrastructure for future generations.
Redwire's Goleta facility is Made for the Mission, delivering advanced power generation technologies that enable spacecraft to operate reliably across every orbit and mission profile. With proprietary designs, deep technical expertise, and large-scale production capabilities, the team develops solar array solutions tailored to each customer's size, power, and orbital needs. At the heart of these offerings is Redwire's patented Roll-Out Solar Array (ROSA), an award-winning system that uses composite booms and modular photovoltaic blankets to create compactly stowable, highly efficient solar arrays. These mission-proven power systems have supported successful deployments across LEO, GEO, and deep space missions, including the ISS, NASA's IXPE mission, and NASA's DART mission.
We have a current opportunity for an Associate Manufacturing Engineer to join our team in Goleta, CA. This is an excellent opportunity for early-career engineers who want to build hands-on experience in aerospace manufacturing and play a key role in producing mission-critical space hardware. You'll collaborate with experienced engineers, technicians, and cross-functional teams to develop manufacturing processes, create work instructions, support ground support equipment (GSE) design, and help bring innovative products to life.
What You'll Do
  • Help set up and optimize product lines, including layout, capacity planning, work instructions, tooling, and equipment
  • Support day-to-day production planning, coordination, and troubleshooting
  • Develop clear, accurate manufacturing documentation such as work instructions, SOPs, test procedures, and project reports
  • Participate in the creation of new manufacturing processes and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Collaborate with Quality Assurance to investigate and resolve non-conformances
  • Contribute to root cause and corrective action (RCCA) work
  • Assist in the design and feedback loop for ground support equipment (GSE)
  • Train technicians and production staff on new or updated procedures
  • Ensure manufacturing processes follow safety and environmental regulations
  • Work cross-functionally with design engineering, production, and quality teams throughout the product lifecycle

Basic Qualifications
  • B.S. in Manufacturing Engineering or a related engineering discipline (or equivalent)
  • 0-2 years of experience in a manufacturing or engineering environment (internships and project experience welcome)
  • Familiarity with RCCA methodology
  • Foundational understanding or strong interest in GSE design
  • Ability to define and document process steps and workflows
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills
  • Problem-solving skills and the ability to contribute to technical solutions
  • Basic proficiency with SolidWorks
  • Ability to work on multiple projects within schedule and budget constraints
  • Ability to travel (10-15% local, occasional overnight trips)
  • US Citizen or Green Card holder (Visa sponsorship not available)

Preferred Skills & Experience
  • Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Experience working with solar arrays in an aerospace field.
  • Proficiency with Visio, MS Project, or similar tools
  • Exposure to lean manufacturing concepts (5S, Kaizen, workflow optimization)
  • Experience reading engineering drawings or using PLM/MES systems
