What is a software test engineer?

A software test engineer conducts quality assurance tests on software to make sure programs are functioning properly. The three types of testing strategies are black box, where the tester is not familiar with the software, white box, where the tester is aware of the software’s internal structure, and gray box, which is a combination of the two. Responsibilities in this job include running diagnostic tests with a critical mindset, assessing the functionality, and reporting the findings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software test engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Test Engineer, you need a solid understanding of software development life cycles, test methodologies, and proficiency in programming languages such as Python or Java, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with automation tools like Selenium, JUnit, or TestNG, and knowledge of bug tracking systems such as Jira are typically required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication set standout engineers apart by enabling thorough defect identification and clear reporting. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring software reliability, meeting quality standards, and facilitating smooth collaboration across development teams.

What are some common challenges faced by software test engineers when working with cross-functional development teams?

Software Test Engineers often encounter challenges such as aligning testing timelines with rapid development cycles, ensuring clear communication of bugs and requirements, and adapting to evolving project priorities. Collaborating closely with developers, product managers, and UX designers requires proactive communication and flexibility, especially when dealing with ambiguous requirements or shifting deadlines. To succeed, it's important to maintain detailed documentation, participate actively in agile ceremonies, and foster a collaborative attitude to resolve issues efficiently and ensure high-quality software releases.

What is the difference between Software Test Engineer vs QA Analyst?

Role Description

Form Energy is seeking a Staff Manufacturing Test Engineer to develop and deploy manufacturing test equipment, software, and data systems supporting the production of our breakthrough energy storage technology. This engineer will work closely with Product Development, R&D, Manufacturing, Quality, and Operations teams to define and architect from the ground up the best manufacturing test solution built for high-volume manufacturing of a novel energy storage system.

The ideal candidate is equally comfortable developing software, integrating instrumentation, troubleshooting hardware, and leading cross-functional teams on the factory floor. Relocation assistance is available.

What you'll do:
  • Develop and maintain manufacturing test software for cell, module, and pack-level product testing.

  • Design hardware and software architectures supporting scalability, maintainability, and long-term operational support, including HMI and PLC automation, MES, and database systems.

  • Develop and deploy manufacturing test equipment supporting new product introductions and process development initiatives.

  • Create test fixtures, hardware interfaces, and instrumentation architectures supporting production and equipment safety requirements.

  • Lead in equipment validation activities and production readiness reviews.

  • Collaborate with Product Development, R&D, Manufacturing, Quality, MES, and Operations teams to define and implement manufacturing test requirements.

  • Define test readiness requirements, and plan & execute the activities for new products, process changes, and factory expansion efforts.

  • Own the Manufacturing Test decision-making in PFMEA, control plans, risk assessments, and design for manufacturability and test.

  • Develop technical documentation and training, including test procedures, work instructions, troubleshooting guides, and equipment specification for sustaining operations.

  • Troubleshoot and perform root cause analysis for manufacturing test equipment, software, and process issues during development, commissioning, and production ramp activities.

  • Serve as a technical resource for manufacturing and operations teams during equipment deployment and production launch activities to ensure test systems deployed meets quality and performance requirements.

What you'll bring:
  • 7+ years of experience developing automated test systems in manufacturing, product development, or industrial environments.

  • Demonstrated ownership of complete test systems from concept through deployment.

  • Experience leading technical projects and mentoring junior engineers.

  • Experience integrating manufacturing test systems with MES, databases, or enterprise software systems.

  • Experience developing and scaling manufacturing test systems from prototype, pilot, or low-volume production environments into high-volume manufacturing.

  • Experience supporting new factory launches, production ramp activities, or capacity expansion initiatives.

  • Experience establishing test architectures, software frameworks, processes, and standards that enable long-term growth and operational scalability.

  • Experience with industrial and embedded communication protocols such as CAN, Modbus, Ethernet-based protocols, UART, SPI, I2C, Protobuf, or similar technologies.

Where you'll work:

This role is based at Form Factory 1 in Weirton, WV-an easy commute from the city of Pittsburgh, PA. This 550,000-square-foot facility is our hub for high-volume battery production and a leader in the new era of American energy manufacturing. Relocation assistance is available.
