What are Junior Software Engineers In Test?

Junior Software Engineers In Test are entry-level professionals who focus on ensuring the quality and reliability of software applications. They write and execute test cases, identify bugs, and collaborate with developers to resolve issues. Their responsibilities often include developing automated tests, maintaining testing frameworks, and reporting on test results. This role provides a foundation in both software development and quality assurance practices, making it an excellent starting point for a career in software engineering or testing.

What are some common challenges faced by Junior Software Engineers In Test when transitioning from manual to automated testing?

Junior Software Engineers In Test often encounter challenges such as learning new automation frameworks, understanding programming concepts, and adapting to complex test environments. It can also be difficult to write effective automated test scripts that are maintainable and scalable. Collaborating with developers and senior QA engineers is key to overcoming these hurdles, as mentorship and code reviews help build confidence and technical skills. Continuous learning and hands-on practice with automation tools like Selenium or Cypress are essential for a smooth transition.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Junior Software Engineer In Test, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior Software Engineer In Test, you need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, basic knowledge of software testing methodologies, and often a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with test automation tools (such as Selenium or JUnit), version control systems (like Git), and continuous integration platforms is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with development teams and ensure high-quality software. These skills are crucial for identifying issues early, maintaining efficient testing processes, and contributing to reliable product releases.

Job description

Does driving innovation and creating better experiences through technology inspire you?

At Re-Leased, we're levelling up real estate and helping property professionals thrive in a digital-first world. Our cloud-based property management platform combines smart automation, AI-driven insights, and deep industry expertise to make everyday work simpler and more rewarding. We're here to help property people run better businesses, build stronger communities, and love what they do.

Your Role

We're looking for our next Junior Engineer to be based in Napier. As a Junior Software Engineer, you will play a key role in the agile Engineering Team; designing, developing, modifying, documenting, testing and deploying complex software to the highest level of quality, with the support and mentorship of senior members of your squad. You will be passionate about working with sophisticated software and eager to grow your skills, with an ability to think on your feet and identify new technical opportunities.

What you'll be owning

  • Write and maintain code according to system requirements and technical specifications, ensuring it meets quality standards
  • Provide support with diagnosing and correcting complex production issues
  • Test your work to ensure it meets team quality standards
  • Identify technology limitations in current application and code
  • Pair programming with more senior engineers; growth here isn't an afterthought, you'll learn through hands-on code review and knowledge-sharing sessions
  • Take initiative to debug, fix and improve existing code

What you'll bring

  • Experience with C#, ASP.NET MVC, .NET Core and SQL Server, or a similar tech stack
  • Skills to design and build great web applications with HTML, CSS, and modern JavaScript
  • An ability to write beautiful code that runs quickly and robustly - and initiative to debug, fix and improve existing code
  • An ability to write beautiful code that runs quickly and robustly, and initiative to debug, fix and improve existing code
  • A flair for developing excellent user interface and experience
  • An owner's mindset: you take initiative, move at pace, and stay curious about the customer and the product, not just the code
  • A desire to work in a busy, fast-paced, dynamic environment with a great team
  • Bonus points for exposure to technologies such as Microsoft Azure, Docker, Redis or Cosmos DB

Our stack & how we work

We're a Microsoft Azure shop, and AI is woven through how we work - not bolted on. Agentic coding is our default: you'll ship features with AI in the loop while keeping engineering quality high, coach the team on getting the best from it, and help improve the prompts and patterns that make it reliable.

Our squads manage their own DevOps practices using Terraform to manage IaC and Azure DevOps for code deployments. Experience with any of these technologies or areas is a bonus so make sure to call this out in your application.

Why you'll love working here

  • Taking care of you: Including comprehensive health insurance, access to a premium EAP service and an annual wellness allowance to spend on what helps you feel good - whether that's towards a gym membership, new running shoes, or mindfulness apps.
  • Support for families: Generous paid parental leave and flexible, family-friendly support designed to help growing families balance work and life with confidence.
  • Recognition for tenure and milestones: We celebrate time, commitment, and contribution with milestone rewards and additional leave as you grow your career with us.
  • Flexible working, built for a global team: With customers and teammates across New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom, and North America, we work in a hybrid, remote-friendly way with collaborative offices and the flexibility of a balanced approach to WFH/i-office work.

Our culture is very important to us too, and we strongly believe in living out our core values:

  • People First: One team globally; our people and customers always come first.
  • Find a Way: Like a river, we find a way around all obstacles
  • Win or Learn: Our journey for improvement never ends; enjoy the ride!
  • Aim High: We dare to set big goals and love the challenge of achieving them against the odds.

Ready to Level Up?

Join us and help shape the future of real estate at one of the most exciting SaaS companies born from New Zealand.
