How much do software test engineer jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 14, 2026, the average hourly pay for software test engineer in Texas is $47.93, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $39.18 and $54.66 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software test engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Test Engineer, you need a solid understanding of software development life cycles, test methodologies, and proficiency in programming languages such as Python or Java, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with automation tools like Selenium, JUnit, or TestNG, and knowledge of bug tracking systems such as Jira are typically required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication set standout engineers apart by enabling thorough defect identification and clear reporting. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring software reliability, meeting quality standards, and facilitating smooth collaboration across development teams.

What is a software test engineer?

A software test engineer conducts quality assurance tests on software to make sure programs are functioning properly. The three types of testing strategies are black box, where the tester is not familiar with the software, white box, where the tester is aware of the software’s internal structure, and gray box, which is a combination of the two. Responsibilities in this job include running diagnostic tests with a critical mindset, assessing the functionality, and reporting the findings.

What are some common challenges faced by software test engineers when working with cross-functional development teams?

Software Test Engineers often encounter challenges such as aligning testing timelines with rapid development cycles, ensuring clear communication of bugs and requirements, and adapting to evolving project priorities. Collaborating closely with developers, product managers, and UX designers requires proactive communication and flexibility, especially when dealing with ambiguous requirements or shifting deadlines. To succeed, it's important to maintain detailed documentation, participate actively in agile ceremonies, and foster a collaborative attitude to resolve issues efficiently and ensure high-quality software releases.

Job description

Are you a Software Test Developer with a passion for quality, a sharp eye for edge cases, and a drive to ensure that what ships actually works? Emerson has an exciting opportunity for you.
We are looking for curious, motivated engineers who are passionate about building reliable software and committed to raising the quality bar for everything their team delivers. Based in Austin, Texas, you will join a collaborative, diverse community and work as an integral member of a cross-functional Agile team focused on the development and delivery of Emerson's PACSystems technologies.
PACSystems is trusted by leading companies across discrete and hybrid manufacturing industries to safely and reliably control critical processes. In this role, you will be a critical voice for quality - partnering with developers, product owners, and domain experts to ensure that the client-side software engineers and operators depend on every day to perform reliably, correctly, and at the standard our customers expect.
Our team embraces modern development practices, including AI-assisted and spec-driven development methodologies, where structured specifications and intelligent tooling are used to accelerate delivery, improve quality, and reduce ambiguity. You will play an active role in shaping how those practices translate into test strategies, automated validation, and continuous quality improvement across the software lifecycle.
You will be part of an organization led by leaders who are deeply committed to technical excellence, Agile principles, and building an environment where engineers do their best work. If you are looking for a role where quality is not an afterthought but a first-class discipline, we want to hear from you.
IN THIS ROLE, YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES WILL:
  • Collaborate - Champion a creative team atmosphere, participate in test reviews, and actively engage in Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, sprint reviews, and retrospectives. Take part in Hackathons, Tech Talks, and Communities of Practice with like-minded engineers.
  • Partner with Domain Experts - Work alongside experienced engineers, product managers, and subject matter experts in industrial automation to understand domain requirements and translate them into comprehensive, customer-focused test strategies.
  • Contribute to Specifications - Support the authoring and review of structured software specifications, ensuring testability is built in from the start and that acceptance criteria are clear, measurable, and complete.
  • Design and Execute Tests - Define, create, and execute system-level test cases from a customer perspective. Configure and maintain test environments, discover and isolate defects, document findings with precision, and validate that repaired issues are fully resolved.
  • Automate - Build and maintain automated unit, integration, and end-to-end test scripts that strengthen the team's automation pipeline and contribute to a consistently release-ready product.
  • Innovate - Apply AI-assisted and spec-driven development practices to test design and validation workflows, exploring how intelligent tooling can improve test coverage, reduce manual effort, and surface defects earlier in the development cycle.
  • Iterate - Actively participate in retrospectives, measure the effectiveness of test processes, and bring forward ideas that improve quality outcomes, reduce overhead, and support the team's continuous improvement goals.
  • Tech Savvy - Stay current on emerging testing tools, AI-enabled QA practices, and test automation frameworks, and look for opportunities to apply new skills to real problems.
  • Always Curious - Ask questions, challenge assumptions, and take time to understand the full system before defining what good looks like. Treat every defect as a learning opportunity.
  • Team Obsessed - Engage openly with your teammates, advocate for quality at every stage of delivery, and hold yourself and others accountable to shipping software that works.

WHO YOU ARE: You stay on top of new technologies and look for ways to apply it. You take time to ask questions and define the problem. You make learning a priority and a goal. You engage in collaborative planning and constantly look to improve your team and deliver results.
FOR THIS ROLE, YOU WILL NEED:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related STEM discipline
  • 2+ years demonstrated proficiency in software testing principles, test case design, and defect lifecycle management OR
  • Internship experience in software testing principles, test case design, and defect lifecycle management and a master's degree in engineering, computer science or related STEM discipline
  • Experience writing automated tests at the unit, integration, or system level
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a genuine desire to understand complex systems
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship now and in the future
    • Individuals with temporary visas such as E, F-1 (including those with OPT or CPT), H-1, H-2, L-1, B, J or TN, or who need sponsorship for work authorization now or in the future, are not eligible for hire.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS THAT SET YOU APART:
  • Experience in software development or quality engineering in a related technical field
  • Familiarity with Agile development practices using Scrum or the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe)
  • Experience designing and executing system-level or end-to-end test strategies for client software applications
  • Exposure to AI-assisted testing workflows or spec-driven test generation approaches
  • Experience with test automation frameworks relevant to desktop or web application testing
  • Familiarity with defect tracking and test management tools such as Azure DevOps, Jira, or similar
  • Genuine interest in industrial automation, process control, or real-time systems
