A software manager oversees the development, installation, and maintenance of new or upgraded software for an organization. As a software manager, you coordinate with staff to determine client needs and expectations, establish budget and timelines, and ensure that employees use the product correctly. You may also train company employees on how to utilize the software after it is installed and help troubleshoot problems that arise.

What does a software manager do?

A Software Manager oversees software development teams, ensuring projects are completed on time and meet quality standards. They coordinate between team members, manage resources, and communicate with stakeholders about progress and requirements. Additionally, they may be responsible for hiring, mentoring, and evaluating team performance. Their role bridges the gap between technical staff and upper management to align technology goals with business objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Manager, you need a strong background in software development, project management, and leadership, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with Agile methodologies, version control systems like Git, and project management tools such as Jira is typically required. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and team-building skills set outstanding managers apart in this role. These competencies are essential for delivering projects on time, fostering effective collaboration, and driving high-performing engineering teams.

Job description

Ready to join future of innovation?
Embedded software is transforming how products are built across automotive, industrial, smart home, consumer, and IoT markets. We are looking for a motivated Software Product Manager to help define software products, tools, and developer experiences that enable next-generation connected devices.
This role is ideal for a recent university graduate who enjoys both technology and business. You may have spent time writing software, debugging firmware, building embedded systems, or studying computer science, software engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field. At same time, you are curious about market trends, customer needs, product strategy, and how technology decisions drive business success.
You will work closely with software engineers, architects, fellow product managers, marketing teams, sales teams, and customers to help shape software roadmaps and product strategies. This position offers opportunity to grow both technical depth and business leadership skills while working alongside experienced product management professionals.
Responsibilities:
  • Help define and maintain software product roadmaps for embedded software, developer tools, middleware, and software ecosystems.
  • Gather and analyze customer requirements, market trends, competitive information, and industry developments.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to understand technical capabilities, product tradeoffs, schedules, and priorities.
  • Translate customer and business needs into product requirements and feature definitions.
  • Assist with prioritization of software features and backlog management.
  • Support product launches through creation of presentations, product collateral, training materials, and technical content.
  • Present recommendations, analyses, and product proposals to cross-functional teams and management.
  • Track industry trends in embedded systems, IoT, artificial intelligence, connectivity, security, and software development tools.
  • Work with ecosystem partners and open-source communities to help drive adoption of software platforms.
  • Contribute to long-term software strategy and product differentiation initiatives.

Required Qualifications:
  • Recent BS or MS graduate in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field
  • 0-2 years experience

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in one or more of following areas is highly desirable, but not required:
  • Embedded software development using C or C++ is essential.
  • ARM Cortex-M microcontrollers.
  • Firmware development, board bring-up, or hardware/software debugging.
  • Real-time operating systems (RTOS) such as FreeRTOS or Zephyr.
  • Wireless technologies such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Thread, Matter, Zigbee, NFC, or UWB.
  • Software development tools including Git, CI/CD, IDEs, debuggers, and build systems.
  • Agile software development methodologies.
  • Open-source software projects or communities.
  • Technical internships, capstone projects, research projects, or personal software projects.

What Makes This Role Unique?
This position sits at intersection of engineering, business, and strategy.
Successful candidates enjoy:
  • Understanding how technology works.
  • Learning how products are defined and brought to market.
  • Working across engineering, marketing, sales, and customer-facing teams.
  • Turning technical innovation into products that customers value.
  • Influencing future direction of software platforms and ecosystems.

If you enjoy writing code, understanding customer problems, analyzing market opportunities, and helping guide product direction, this role provides an opportunity to develop into a future software product leader.
