What is a software license manager?

Software License Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing and managing an organization's software licenses to ensure compliance with vendor agreements and legal requirements. They track software usage, renewals, and expirations, and help optimize license procurement to reduce costs and avoid penalties. These managers often coordinate with IT, procurement, and legal departments to maintain accurate records and advise on best practices for software asset management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software license manager?

To thrive as a Software License Manager, you need a solid understanding of software asset management, licensing agreements, and compliance regulations, often supported by a relevant degree or certifications like ITIL or SAM. Familiarity with license management tools such as FlexNet Manager, ServiceNow, or Snow License Manager is typically required. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial for negotiating contracts and ensuring policy adherence. These skills help organizations avoid legal risks, optimize software costs, and maintain compliance with vendor agreements.

What are some common challenges software license managers face when ensuring compliance across multiple software vendors?

Software License Managers often encounter challenges such as keeping track of diverse licensing agreements, managing software usage across different departments, and staying updated with frequent changes in vendor terms. Ensuring compliance can be complex, particularly in organizations with a mix of on-premises, cloud, and subscription-based licenses. Regular internal audits, clear communication with stakeholders, and leveraging specialized license management tools are essential strategies to overcome these challenges and avoid costly compliance issues.

Job description

Houston, United States | Posted on 06/10/2026

OpenLM is looking for a curious, technically-minded Technical Account Executive to join our US team. This is a hybrid role sitting at the intersection of presales, technical support, and customer business partnership. You will work directly with prospects and customers โ€” understanding their engineering and IT environments, demonstrating our software license management platform, and ensuring their long-term success.

This is a growth role. Strong performers will be developed into Key Account Managers or Business Managers, taking ownership of strategic accounts and regional revenue targets.

What you will do
  • Run product demonstrations tailored to each prospect's technical environment (EDA, CAD, engineering software stacks).
  • Respond to RFPs and technical questionnaires; prepare evaluation plans and proof-of-concept scopes.
  • Partner with the sales team to qualify opportunities and move deals through the pipeline.
Customer success & technical support
  • Serve as the primary technical point of contact for a portfolio of US accounts post-sale.
  • Troubleshoot license server issues, integration questions, and deployment challenges.
  • Conduct periodic business reviews and usage health checks with customer stakeholders.
Business & account development
  • Understand each customer's license optimization goals, IT governance requirements, and budget cycles.
  • Identify upsell and expansion opportunities; collaborate with account owners on renewal strategies.
  • Build relationships across IT, procurement, and engineering personas within customer organizations.
Requirements Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field preferred; equivalent handsโ€‘on technical experience will be considered.
  • 0โ€“3 years of experience in a technical sales, solutions engineering, or support role (internships count).
  • Comfortable discussing technical topics โ€” servers, networks, software licensing, or IT infrastructure.
  • Strong written and verbal communication; confident presenting to both technical and business audiences.
  • Selfโ€‘starter who can manage a pipeline, follow up diligently, and work independently across time zones.
Nice to have
  • Familiarity with software license management, EDA tools, CAD/CAM, or HPC environments.
  • Experience with CRM tools (Zoho, Salesforce, or similar) and sales pipeline management.
  • Exposure to enterprise SaaS sales cycles or B2B account management.
  • Second language is a plus โ€” our US customer base spans global engineering teams.
Your growth path
  • Technical Account Executive: Presales, POC delivery, technical support, early account ownership.
  • Key Account Manager: Own a strategic account portfolio; renewals, expansions, executive relationships; Year 2โ€“3.
  • P&L ownership for the US region; team coordination, partner strategy; Year 3+
Why OpenLM
  • Global impact โ€” our platform is used by aerospace, automotive, defense, and R&D teams in 40+ countries.
  • Real ownership from day one โ€” you will run POCs, lead calls, and manage accounts, not just shadow seniors.
  • Fastโ€‘growing company with a flat structure โ€” your ideas reach leadership quickly.
  • Remoteโ€‘friendly with a collaborative team across the US, India, Japan, and Europe.
  • Competitive base salary, performance bonus, for strong performers.
