Responsible for enabling significant organizational and technological change by providing a foundation for high-velocity delivery of business capabilities with the goal of continuously improving Old Dominion's ability to exceed our customer expectations.
Provide leadership across multiple application delivery teams. Oversee SDLC processes and tools including the design, development, project management, and maintenance of ODFL applications.
Responsible for resource management and career development (recruitment, retention, and development).
This role is expected to be a highly energetic thought leader, with deep technical acuity. The incumbent in this role must possess the ability and desire to lead, mentor, and coach a high performing team of Software Architects.
Primary Responsibilities
  • Oversee and set the strategic and technical direction for the application delivery organization
  • Lead, mentor, and manage the OD Software Engineering team
  • Lead programs to develop the technical acuity of the OD Software development teams
  • Socialize, and communicate IT architectural standards and technical solution established by the OD Architecture team
  • Continuously developing new skills to stay current with the changing IT and Business landscape
  • Coach and mentor delivery managers, technical leaders, software developers, in the development of new skills and practices including facilitating cross team learning sessions.
  • Champion and teach the principles of a DevOps culture
  • Manage the career growth of the solution architects
  • Coach the development soft skills to enable better cross-team cohesion between business and IT roles
  • Coach Solution Architects and Developers with leadership aptitude into architecture, design, and engineering roles
  • Act as a strategic solution advisor as a member of the federated OD Architecture team
  • Participating in the Architecture Review Board process and leading the Design Review Board
  • Lead the selection of appropriate technologies and patterns for the implementation of solution designs under the guidance of Architecture Review Board
  • Research and evaluate emerging technologies, and design patterns
  • Participate in the creation of reference models for, and the adoption of, emerging technologies and implementation patterns
  • Participate in producing the business case for the adoption of emerging technology delivery processes and solutions

Job Qualifications
Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent combination of relevant education, training and experience

Required Experience:
  • 7 years of experience in IT software design and engineering
  • Experience leading and managing software product engineering teams
  • Direct experience in the development of 12-Factor solutions
  • Experience with data management, and the associated architecture patterns of large-scale application platforms
  • Experience with RDBMS and NoSQL technologies
  • Experience with distributed computing environments
  • Experience with traditional or cloud native CI/CD technologies (i.e. Jenkins or ArgoCD)
  • Significant expertise building modern, production-grade applications using Java (including modern Java versions), Spring Framework (e.g., Spring Boot), and Angular, with strong grounding in API design, security, performance, and maintainability.
  • Significant experience in both agile and waterfall software development practices
  • Knowledge of, and experience with the implementation of Enterprise Software Design Patterns
  • Experience with Application-to-Application integration paradigms
  • Aptitude for, desire to, and experience in mentoring solution architects, and software engineers
  • Demonstrated ability to gain astute insight during periods of ambiguity
  • Exceptional partnering and communication skills
  • Ability to self-direct work and manage own work pace
  • Demonstrated drive to constantly learn new skills and technologies
  • Proven Experience leading a mixed team of permanent, contractor, and offshore resources
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities
