About the role
april is looking for a brilliant, curious and creative Engineering Manager - Software with a passion for data that's ready to take on a huge opportunity to solve tax, and save people time and money. This role is a 70/30 player-coach position, with approximately 70% dedicated to hands-on coding and individual contributor work and 30% focused on people management and team leadership. Team members residing within the New York City metropolitan area must maintain a minimum on-site presence of three days per week.
Key responsibilities
  • Lead and own full-cycle (from idea to production) projects that are directly used by and impact millions of people
  • Work closely with the product & UX to define product requirements and execute the development plans
  • Design system architectures, select/evaluate tools
  • Build cloud-native microservices
  • Mentor, and grow the team, our practices, and our technology stack

Experience
  • 6+ years of software engineering experience building production-level web applications in large-scale products
  • 6+ years of experience with modern full-stack frameworks React/Angular/Vue or equivalent programming language, developing high-scale applications
  • 4+ years of experience building reactive web & mobile-web frontends using React/Next/Angular/Vue over TypeScript/JavaScript
  • 4+ years of experience with Python as a proper microservice backend
  • Experience leading, managing and mentoring team members
  • Passion for clean code and agile work
  • Experience with modern cloud environments (GCP, AWS)
  • Strong architecture skills - ability to design for scale, and velocity, robustness, and readability of end-to-end data-driven solutions
  • Passion for data, customer experience, and building high-quality software
  • Excellent communication skills, verbal and written
  • Bonus: gRPC, protobuf
