Job Summary
Leonardo DRS Land Systems is seeking an Embedded Software Engineer Intern for Summer 2026 to help our Software Engineering (SW) team meet the technical performance requirements on complex system development programs. This position will be working on a variety of programs and writing (C,C++,C#, Java and Python) software that runs on the hardware we develop. The position will also execute an interdisciplinary process to ensure that the customer and stakeholder needs and requirements are satisfied in a high quality, trustworthy, cost efficient, and schedule compliant manner. The purpose of the internship is to provide meaningful professional hands-on experience to students with proven academic performance and leadership potential. Students will also get to utilize our companies flexible work schedule.
Job Responsibilities
  • Work under the direction of the Software Engineering Manager, Software Engineering Technical Director, and Lead Software Engineers on various Software Engineering activities
  • May code using C/C++/C#/Java to complete coding assignments
  • Source code management of new and/or modified code
  • May use MATLAB and/or Simulink software in the performance of assignments
  • Work closely with and assist engineers in the conduct of various engineering assignments
  • Carry out basic work instructions that will help in understanding the fundamentals of the Company and also learn new things
  • Conduct limited scope testing under the supervision of engineers
  • Complete assigned tasks on time
  • Gather and assemble data for engineers
  • May be required to help in research in a particular field
  • Conduct design analysis and/or calculations under the supervision of engineers
  • Assist engineers with appropriate design details
  • Must have good interpersonal skills and have the ability to build a good network
  • Perform a wide variety of tasks to gain familiarity with the engineering staff, methods, programs and practices
  • Support, communicate, reinforce and defend the mission, values and culture of the organization
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED, and currently a Junior or above in a Bachelor's program in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or equivalent
  • Must have good interpersonal skills
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills, written and oral

Desired Knowledge:
  • Basic knowledge and familiarity with: C, C++, C#, Java, Python, git
  • Knowledge of Windows, Linux, or a real time operating system
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office products

The salary range for this position is $41,011.00/year- $53,315.00/year for the state of Illinois. This range reflects the good faith estimate of pay the employer is willing to offer at the time of posting. Several factors can influence the pay scale, including but not limited to: Federal contract labor categories and contract wage rates, collective bargaining agreements, geographic location, business considerations, scope, and responsibilities of the position, local or other applicable market conditions, and internal equity. Other factors include the candidate's qualifications such as prior work experience, specific skills and competencies, education/training, and certifications. In addition to base pay, employees may be eligible for: annual performance-based bonuses, equity awards, and overtime pay (for non-exempt employees as applicable.
