Employer & Industry UsageUsed by tech companies for high-level talent recognition and leadership developmentCommon across tech firms, startups, and corporate IT departments
Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding advanced roles, career progression, or specialized positionsGeneral software development roles, entry to mid-level positions

The main difference is that Software Engineering Fellows are often senior, specialized, or leadership-oriented roles requiring extensive experience or advanced credentials, whereas Software Engineers are more common, entry to mid-level roles focused on software development tasks.

What is a Software Engineering Fellow?

A Software Engineering Fellow is typically an advanced trainee or early-career professional participating in a specialized program designed to develop strong software engineering skills. These fellowship programs often combine hands-on technical training, mentorship, and real-world project experience, sometimes at a company or through an academic institution. Fellows may work on coding assignments, learn about software development methodologies, and network with industry professionals. The goal is to bridge the gap between academic learning and professional software engineering roles, making fellows more competitive in the job market.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Software Engineering Fellow, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Engineering Fellow, you need a solid grasp of programming concepts, data structures, algorithms, and usually a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with development tools like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and frameworks relevant to the fellowship's focus is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and a willingness to learn help fellows excel and adapt quickly. These skills and qualities are essential to contribute effectively to projects, grow technically, and make the most of mentorship opportunities.

What types of projects and technologies do Software Engineering Fellows typically work on during their fellowship?

Software Engineering Fellows often engage in hands-on projects that mirror real-world industry work, such as building web applications, contributing to open-source repositories, or collaborating on team-based coding challenges. The technologies involved frequently include popular programming languages like Python, JavaScript, or Java, as well as frameworks such as React or Django. Fellows usually rotate through different project assignments to gain exposure to both front-end and back-end development, while also participating in code reviews and agile team meetings. This structure helps Fellows build a robust portfolio and develop collaboration skills essential for professional software engineering roles.

Job description

LogicGate® is the leading AI GRC platform for the Enterprise, helping governance, risk, and compliance teams limit surprises, strengthen resilience, augment program performance, and confidently quantify impact and business value. Built to provide a centralized view of risk and compliance, with AI intelligence woven into the platform's core, LogicGate delivers real-time insights and actionable data to help drive current business decisions, with the flexibility to scale alongside evolving business needs. Recognized as a Leader in the GRC Market, LogicGate continues to further solidify its position as a best-in-class platform.
At LogicGate, our people are the foundation of everything we do. We are committed to delivering an exceptional experience for our employees and our customers by empowering and enabling our people to take ownership, make an impact, and deliver their best work.
About the role
As an Engineering Manager at LogicGate, you'll lead a high-performing team building our Risk Cloud SaaS application that helps organizations manage governance, risk, and compliance at scale. You're responsible for developing exceptional engineers and delivering product outcomes that directly impact our customers' ability to manage risk.
You'll set technical direction for your team and own how the work gets done. You're accountable for technical execution, team velocity, timelines, and quality. This means driving sustainable delivery of roadmap initiatives while championing modern development practices-test-driven development, frequent releases, continuous improvement. You'll work closely with Product, QA, Customer Success, and fellow engineering leaders to shape technical strategy and execute on ambitious goals.
You'll grow your engineers' capabilities, remove obstacles that slow them down, and create an environment where they can do their best work while consistently delivering value to customers and the business.
How you'll spend your time:
  • Lead / Manage, grow, and develop 4-6 engineers through regular 1:1s, coaching, and career development while removing obstacles that slow them down.
  • Execute / Set technical direction and own how the work gets done-you're accountable for technical execution, team velocity, timelines, and quality.
  • Collaborate / Work closely with Product, QA, Customer Success, and Sales Engineering on prioritization and execution of roadmap items using Agile methodologies.
  • Improve / Assess current engineering practices and drive continuous improvement initiatives that increase developer efficiency and team performance.
  • Partner / Work with senior leadership and other engineering managers to build a collaborative culture and align engineering efforts with company goals.
  • Manage / Oversee vendor relationships, evaluate build-vs-buy decisions, and manage cross-functional dependencies that impact your team's delivery

What we use:
  • Front-end: TypeScript, Angular, Webpack, Sass
  • Back-end: Spring Boot, Java, Kotlin, Go
  • Data: Neo4j, Redis, RabbitMQ, PostgreSQL
  • Test: JUnit, Jasmine, Spectator, Cypress
  • Infrastructure: AWS, Terraform, Kubernetes, Docker, Ansible
  • Work: GitLab, Slack, Jira, Confluence, G Suite

What you'll bring:
  • 5+ years of professional experience in software engineering as a Developer, System Administrator, or Database Administrator (we value outcomes and leadership ability over exact years).
  • Experience managing 5+ direct reports, or Team Lead/Developer Lead experience with strong people leadership
  • Understanding of modern software frameworks, system architecture, and best practices for building scalable SaaS applications.
  • Strong competency in Agile processes, product roadmaps, prioritization, and estimation-you know how to balance velocity with quality.
  • Knowledge of security practices, compliance frameworks, and OWASP principles.
  • Desire to grow as both a technical leader and people manager in an engineering atmosphere that moves quickly and strives to raise the bar.
  • Ability to work across business units-you've collaborated with Product, Sales, Customer Success, or Support teams to deliver outcomes.

How you'll Raise the Bar:
  • Champion modern development practices like test-driven development, frequent releases, and continuous improvement. Ensure your team ships with both velocity and quality.
  • Build a culture where engineers are challenged, supported, and able to do their best work. Grow their capabilities and create clear paths for development.
  • Drive developer efficiency initiatives that eliminate obstacles and reduce toil. Enable your team to focus on delivering outcomes that matter to customers.
  • Partner with engineering leadership to improve our programs, processes, and technical strategy. Assess what's working, recommend changes, and execute on ambitious goals.

The anticipated base salary range for the role is $165,000 - $200,000 per year + variable + equity + benefits. Actual salaries may vary and will be based on factors, such as the candidate's qualifications, skills, competencies, and proficiency for the role. Internal candidates who have current pay within or above the hiring range are still encouraged to apply if interested.
