They help businesses design, develop, and implement software solutions tailored to specific needs, often optimizing existing systems or recommending new technologies. Their work can include code reviews, system architecture design, process improvement, and troubleshooting technical challenges. Software Engineering Consultants often work on a contractual basis, bringing specialized expertise that may not exist within a company’s in-house team.

What are some common challenges faced by software engineering consultants when working with client teams?

Software Engineering Consultants often navigate the challenge of quickly adapting to new technologies, workflows, and company cultures unique to each client. They must build trust with client teams, communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders, and deliver solutions within tight deadlines. Balancing multiple projects and managing expectations requires strong organization and adaptability. Consultants also need to stay current with industry best practices to provide valuable insights and maintain credibility.

Job description

ABOUT 3CI
3Ci, an MAU company, is an IT professional services and technology consulting firm specializing in full-stack software development, data engineering, process intelligence, and digital transformation. We partner with leading enterprises to accelerate transformation and deliver measurable business outcomes.
3Ci's Software Engineering practice is the firm's highest-volume technical capability - delivering custom applications, cloud-native platforms, legacy modernization, and AI-integrated software solutions that power clients' most important business processes. As AI-augmented development becomes the industry standard, 3Ci's Software Engineering practice leads with AI-native engineering as a core delivery expectation at every level.
THE OPPORTUNITY
The Consultant - Software Engineering independently owns feature workstreams and development delivery tracks within client applications and platform builds, operating with moderate supervision. This role bridges foundational development contribution and senior technical leadership - combining strong engineering execution with growing system design capability, client relationship skills, and an emerging ability to guide junior developers.
Consultants are expected to deliver production-quality code independently, participate meaningfully in technical design decisions, and begin advising working-level client stakeholders on technical trade-offs. AI-augmented development is a core expectation at this level - Consultants use AI coding tools as a standard productivity multiplier and begin introducing AI-assisted engineering workflows to clients and teammates.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Feature & Module Ownership
  • Independently design, implement, test, and ship features and modules within established application architecture

  • Own assigned vertical slices: front-end, back-end, API layer, and database schema changes end-to-end

  • Estimate story points and sprint commitments accurately; flag scope or complexity risks early

  • Conduct thorough code reviews for peers: providing specific, constructive, and actionable feedback

  • Debug and resolve production issues on owned modules; document root causes and preventive measures

Technical Design & Architecture Contribution
  • Contribute meaningfully to technical design discussions: propose patterns, evaluate trade-offs, and raise maintainability concerns

  • Design well-structured REST APIs, event-driven microservices, and database schemas appropriate to the use case

  • Apply SOLID principles, design patterns, and clean architecture practices in all delivered code

  • Contribute to Architecture Decision Records (ADRs) and technical documentation on managed workstreams

  • Identify and raise technical debt, security vulnerabilities, and performance bottlenecks to Senior Consultant

DevSecOps & Engineering Quality
  • Build and maintain automated test suites: unit, integration, and contract tests on owned modules

  • Contribute to CI/CD pipeline configuration and maintenance: GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, or equivalent

  • Apply SAST, DAST, and dependency scanning tools as part of the development workflow

  • Monitor application performance and error rates on owned components using observability tools

Client Collaboration & Team Contribution
  • Serve as day-to-day technical contact for client engineers and working-level product managers

  • Participate in sprint demos, technical walkthroughs, and architecture review sessions

  • Coach and guide Junior Consultants on coding standards, testing discipline, and professional practices

  • Support pursuit activities under senior direction: technical scoping, effort estimation, and proposal content

AI-Augmented Software Engineering
  • Apply AI coding assistants as a standard development accelerator across all feature and module work

  • Use AI for complex refactoring, test suite generation, API design scaffolding, code documentation, and debugging acceleration

  • Introduce and onboard client engineering teams on AI-assisted development workflows on applicable engagements

  • Develop and contribute documented AI engineering use cases to 3Ci's Software Engineering AI Playbook

  • Apply prompt engineering to produce accurate, production-ready AI-assisted code with robust testing

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field
  • 2-5 years of professional software development experience
  • Demonstrated ownership of features or modules in production applications
  • Proficiency in at least one modern language (Python, TypeScript/JavaScript, Java, C#, or Go) and associated frameworks
  • Working knowledge of REST API design, relational and/or NoSQL databases, and cloud deployment
  • Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and version control workflows
  • Professional AI coding tool usage in a development workflow with demonstrated code review discipline

Preferred Certifications & Credentials
  • AWS Certified Developer Associate or Azure Developer Associate (AZ-204)
  • GitHub Copilot certification or equivalent AI engineering credential
  • Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD) or equivalent container/cloud-native credential
  • HashiCorp Terraform Associate or equivalent IaC certification
  • PCEP / PCAP (Python) or equivalent language certification
  • CSM or PSM I (for agile delivery on consulting engagements)

WHY 3CI
At 3Ci, Consultants own real workstreams - not support tasks. You'll build production features, make meaningful technical decisions, and grow your engineering capability on some of the most interesting application development challenges in the Atlanta market. We support your path to Senior Consultant with certification investment, structured mentorship, and a culture that takes engineering craft seriously.
