What does a software engineer onsite do?

A Software Engineer Onsite is responsible for designing, developing, testing, and maintaining software applications while working physically at the company's office or client location. They collaborate closely with other engineers, product managers, and stakeholders to deliver high-quality solutions. Being onsite often allows for more direct communication, quicker troubleshooting, and greater involvement in team activities and company culture. This role may also require attending in-person meetings and participating in onsite deployments or support.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software engineer onsite?

To thrive as a Software Engineer Onsite, you need strong programming skills, proficiency in software development methodologies, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and knowledge of specific programming languages or frameworks are essential, and certifications like AWS Certified Developer can be advantageous. Exceptional problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication help you collaborate with colleagues and stakeholders in an onsite environment. These skills ensure the delivery of robust, maintainable software solutions while facilitating efficient workflow and innovation within the team.

How does working onsite as a software engineer typically impact collaboration and project workflows?

Working onsite as a Software Engineer often enhances direct communication and collaboration with team members, project managers, and stakeholders. You'll likely participate in daily stand-ups, code reviews, and design sessions in person, which can streamline decision-making and problem-solving. Additionally, being onsite allows for quicker feedback and fosters a stronger sense of team cohesion. This environment can be particularly beneficial for complex projects requiring frequent collaboration and iterative development.

  • Develop and manage taxonomies, controlled vocabularies, and semantic metadata schemas across operational and business domains.
  • Integrate ontological structures with enterprise data platforms, AI/ML pipelines, and analytics environments.
  • Partner with AI/ML Engineers and data scientists to ensure ontology structures support downstream model training, feature engineering, and inference pipelines.
  • Define and enforce data governance standards for entity definitions, lineage tracking, and metadata management across enterprise platforms.
  • Monitor ontology performance and usage patterns; proactively identify gaps and drive continuous improvement.
  • Support integration of ontology layers with enterprise data products, dashboards, and reporting tools.
  • Evaluate and implement ontology management tools and platforms, ensuring scalability and interoperability.
  • Translate complex technical concepts into clear documentation for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Stay current with advancements in knowledge representation, semantic web technologies, and AI/ML techniques.

  • Experience with ontology development tools such as Protégé, TopBraid Composer, or similar.
  • Experience in developing conceptual, logical, and physical data models, as well as canonical data designs
  • Experience with graph databases (e.g., Stardog, Neo4j, Amazon Neptune, Azure Cosmos DB for Gremlin) and graph query languages.
  • Experience collaborating in cross-functional Agile or DevOps environments.
  • Active and transferable TS/SCI U.S. government issued security clearance is required prior to start date. U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance

  • Experience mentoring or leading data modeling teams.
  • Knowledge of linked data principles and experience publishing or consuming linked datasets.
  • Exposure to ML/AI pipelines and practical experience enhancing them through semantic enrichment.
  • Experience with LLM-grounded knowledge graphs or retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines.
  • Excellent analytical thinking with ability to translate ambiguous business requirements into formal semantic models.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams to model complex business domains.
  • Strong skills in SQL, SPARQL, Cypher, and relational/NoSQL databases.
  • Strong understanding of data governance, metadata management, and master data management (MDM) principles.
