What does a software engineer do for a nonprofit organization in a remote role?

A Software Engineer working remotely for a nonprofit organization is responsible for designing, developing, testing, and maintaining software applications that support the nonprofit’s mission. This can include building websites, databases, or custom tools to help the organization manage operations, fundraising, data analysis, or outreach. Remote engineers collaborate with teams using digital communication tools, ensuring that technology solutions are accessible, secure, and align with the nonprofit’s goals. They may also help train staff and volunteers on new systems and offer ongoing technical support.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software engineer in a remote nonprofit organization?

To excel as a Software Engineer in a remote nonprofit, you generally need strong programming skills (such as Python, JavaScript, or Ruby), experience with web development frameworks, and preferably a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with collaboration tools like GitHub, project management systems (e.g., Jira or Trello), and knowledge of cloud platforms or CRM systems commonly used in nonprofits is valuable. Excellent communication, self-motivation, and empathy help you collaborate effectively across distributed teams and understand nonprofit missions. These skills ensure you can deliver impactful technology solutions that support organizational goals and foster positive change with limited resources.

What unique challenges might remote software engineers face when working for a nonprofit organization?

Remote software engineers in nonprofit organizations often work with limited resources and budgets, which can impact access to the latest tools or technologies. Additionally, they may collaborate with team members and stakeholders who have varying levels of technical expertise, requiring strong communication skills to explain complex solutions. Balancing mission-driven goals with technical constraints is common, so adaptability and creative problem-solving are especially valuable in this environment. Despite these challenges, the work can be highly rewarding, as engineers directly contribute to meaningful causes and community impact.

We serve 1000+ global customers with our quality management and clinical data capture software, helping them get their products on the market and keep them there.

When you join the team at Greenlight Guru, you'll be a part of a collaborative, mission-driven team working in one of the most exciting and rewarding industries on the planet. Backed by JMI Equity, one of the premier growth equity firms for SaaS companies, Greenlight Guru is growing-and looking for individuals who are difference makers. Is that you?

Summary:

We are seeking a highly capable Senior Software Engineer to deliver high-quality, scalable software solutions across complex systems. This role requires a deep understanding of modern cloud-native technologies, ownership over technical delivery, and a collaborative mindset to influence both peers and product direction. You'll work closely with engineers, product managers, and designers to build impactful features that serve our customers reliably at scale.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and contribute to multiple concurrent engineering efforts across the full stack while integrating and/or orchestrating with AI tooling - from front-end interfaces to the backend services and APIs that power them
  • Work both independently and collaboratively to drive technical solutions and deliver high-quality outcomes
  • Design and build full-stack applications - responsive front-end experiences (React or similar) backed by well-architected services - with performance, scalability, and reliability considered at every layer
  • Take ownership of features from planning through delivery: proactively estimate scope, lead implementation with minimal guidance, and provide thoughtful, high-quality code reviews that elevate the team's output
  • Design performant, scalable, and reliable software, considering both functional and non-functional requirements across front-end, backend, and data layers
  • Understand data flow, established patterns, and functional needs end-to-end to inform development
  • Create a plan for your work by gathering information from your squad and the broader R&D organization
  • Develop software that meets our internal standards of quality
    • Make daily code contributions in small, manageable chunks, with continuous integration in mind
    • Fix major issues, defects, and vulnerabilities in existing codebases, front-end or back-end
    • Create and update unit and integration tests to ensure proper coverage of your contributions and maintain the coverage standard
    • Proactively raise the bar for engineering quality by defining and evolving coding standards, workflow processes, performance benchmarks, and observability practices
    • Leverage observability best practices to define monitors and alerts that ensure real-time insight into the operational health of production systems
  • Diagnose and fix performance and optimization problems in legacy code, across the stack
  • Partner with engineers and R&D stakeholders across teams to ensure effective collaboration and deliver results that move the business forward
  • Teach and provide guidance to others in your area of expertise
  • Participate in resolving, and sometimes lead the resolution of, after-hours production incidents
  • Demonstrate your project work and product contributions

Qualifications
  • 6+ years of professional software development experience across the stack
  • Full-stack proficiency: hands-on experience building front-end applications with React or similar modern JavaScript frameworks, paired with experience designing and building the backend services behind them
  • Solid foundation in cloud-native software architecture and development, including service design, data modeling, and persistence layers
  • Fluency building and consuming REST, RPC, and GraphQL APIs
  • Familiarity with technology stacks and architectures similar to Greenlight Guru's
  • Exposure to or interest in AI-powered features in a SaaS product - experience with large language models (LLMs), generative AI APIs, or intelligent automation is a plus
  • Skilled in writing unit and integration test suites
  • Comfortable working within continuous integration pipelines and automation workflows
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a strong emphasis on active listening
  • Highly collaborative with exceptional interpersonal skills
  • Data-driven mindset with a track record of using metrics to guide technical decisions and evolve systems over time
  • Sharp problem-solving and troubleshooting instincts
  • Genuine curiosity about how your code performs and creates impact in the real world

Benefits you'll enjoy:

  • Supportive teammates and co-workers who care deeply about our mission
  • Flexible Paid Time Off policy and working hours
  • Remote-first culture
  • Home Office stipend upon hire
  • Multiple Health insurance options (vision, medical, dental)
  • 401k (with company match)
  • Equity Program Eligibility (based on role and/or tenure)
  • Three months of paid maternity leave
  • Disability insurance

This role can be located within the United States or Canada.
