Automotive Software Engineer Remote information

What does an automotive software engineer do when working remotely?

An Automotive Software Engineer working remotely designs, develops, tests, and maintains software systems used in vehicles, such as infotainment systems, ADAS (Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems), and vehicle control units. They typically collaborate virtually with other engineers and stakeholders to ensure software quality and compliance with automotive standards. Remote engineers use tools for code versioning, debugging, and testing, and may need to simulate vehicle environments on their local machines or connect to remote testing hardware. Effective communication and self-management are crucial for success in this remote role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an automotive software engineer remote?

To thrive as an Automotive Software Engineer (Remote), you need a solid background in computer science, embedded systems, and automotive protocols, typically backed by a relevant degree and experience in automotive software development. Familiarity with programming languages like C/C++, AUTOSAR, CAN, and tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, as well as knowledge of software development life cycles and industry standards (e.g., ISO 26262), is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for remote teamwork and complex project delivery. These skills ensure the delivery of reliable, safe, and innovative automotive software solutions in a distributed work environment.

What are some common challenges faced by remote automotive software engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Automotive Software Engineers often encounter challenges such as collaborating across different time zones, maintaining clear communication with hardware teams, and ensuring secure access to proprietary vehicle systems. To address these, companies typically use robust project management tools, schedule regular video meetings, and implement secure remote development environments. Building strong documentation habits and proactive communication also help ensure alignment with cross-functional teams, making remote work both productive and rewarding.

Job description

How You'll Make an Impact:

As a Senior Software Engineer on the Workflow Squad, you'll design, build, and operate product capabilities that help Cloudbeds support increasingly complex hospitality operations. This is primarily a backend product engineering role, working in PHP and Java across services, APIs, data, and event-driven systems, with occasional frontend contributions when needed.

You'll take ownership of work from technical design through production, balancing near-term product delivery with the reliability and maintainability of the broader platform. You'll work closely with product and engineering partners to solve ambiguous problems and deliver simple, dependable experiences for our customers.

Our Workflow Squad:

The Workflow Squad builds product and platform capabilities that coordinate business processes across Cloudbeds products and services. The team works across existing systems to create flexible, reliable experiences that support a wide range of customer needs. You'll join a hands-on, product-minded group that values pragmatic architecture, clear ownership, maintainable code, and strong collaboration across Product, Design, Infrastructure, Security, and Engineering. The squad works AI-first. Claude Code is the default starting point for implementation, and the engineer who ships a change owns it in review and in production.

What You Bring to the Team:

  • Design, build, and operate customer-facing backend services and product capabilities primarily in PHP and Java, with focused frontend contributions when needed
  • Build reliable APIs, data models, integrations, asynchronous processes, and event-driven services using PostgreSQL, Kafka, REST, and gRPC
  • Own changes end-to-end across application code, service boundaries, infrastructure, and deployment configuration, from technical design through production operation
  • Work AI-first, using Claude Code as the default starting point for implementation, and hold what it produces to the same review, testing, and production bar as code you write by hand
  • Improve scalability, resilience, performance, security, and maintainability across distributed systems that support customer-critical operations
  • Own observability, automated testing, release quality, production support, and incident response as part of the team's on-call rotation
  • Collaborate closely with Product, Design, Infrastructure, Security, and other engineering teams to turn ambiguous requirements into pragmatic, reliable product solutions
  • Contribute as a senior individual contributor through architecture decisions, code reviews, pair programming, documentation, mentoring, and continuous improvement of engineering practices

What Sets You Up for Success:

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience building, shipping, and operating production applications, with strong proficiency in PHP and/or Java
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals, including maintainable architecture, automated testing, debugging, performance, security, and operational reliability
  • Solid understanding of API design, relational data modeling, PostgreSQL, distributed systems, and asynchronous or event-driven architecture
  • Hands-on experience with Kafka or similar messaging and streaming systems, REST, gRPC, and service integrations
  • Experience owning cloud-native delivery and operations, including Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, CI/CD, observability, and production incident response
  • A track record of owning complex work end-to-end, navigating ambiguity, and making pragmatic technical trade-offs
  • Comfort working in a polyglot codebase and making focused contributions outside your primary backend stack when the product requires it
  • Strong product sense and customer empathy, with the ability to translate business needs into simple, reliable product experiences
  • Hands-on experience shipping production code with AI coding agents
  • Business-level English fluency, with strong written communication and collaboration skills in a remote, globally distributed team

Compensation:ย Depending on your skills and experience, you can expect your annual compensation to be between $130,000 and $175,000 USD. Please note that we maintain high flexibility, and packages above this range will be considered. (The salary is only for US-based candidates).

Work Authorization: Please note that applicants must be currently authorized to work in the location where the position is located without requiring visa sponsorship. At this time, Cloudbeds is unable to provide sponsorship for work visas.
