Balancing technical oversight with people management, and learning to delegate effectively, are critical skills to develop. Additionally, they must stay current with technology trends while focusing on team growth and performance.

The main difference between a Software Engineer Manager and a Software Developer lies in their responsibilities. The manager oversees teams, manages projects, and aligns technical work with business goals, while the developer primarily focuses on coding and building software solutions. Both roles require strong technical skills, but the manager also needs leadership and project management abilities.

What is a software engineer manager?

A Software Engineer Manager is a professional who leads a team of software engineers, overseeing the design, development, and deployment of software projects. They are responsible for managing team performance, setting goals, and ensuring that projects are completed on time and within budget. In addition to technical expertise, they also handle hiring, mentoring, and career development of team members. Software Engineer Managers often collaborate with other departments to align technical solutions with business objectives. Their role combines leadership, project management, and deep technical knowledge.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software engineer manager?

To thrive as a Software Engineer Manager, you need a solid background in software development, team leadership experience, and often a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira), version control systems (such as Git), and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure) is typically required, along with relevant certifications. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and mentoring abilities help you build effective teams and drive project success. These skills ensure you can lead technical initiatives, foster collaboration, and deliver high-quality software solutions in dynamic environments.

Title: Software Engineer ID: 5313 - INV Division: ISD Region: Various Location: Washington, DC
Description

Software Engineer

Roy Jorgensen Associates, Inc. (Jorgensen) is a world leader in maintenance management. For over 65 years Jorgensen has provided a diverse range of facility and highway infrastructure, consulting, maintenance and management services. Our professionals are in the forefront as facility managers, maintenance engineers, trainers, assets managers and solution providers. Our firm is focused on the operations and maintenance of transportation and public works infrastructure assets. Our maintenance operations is comprised of professional engineers, certified quality control inspectors, and experienced maintenance technicians with proficiency developing and executing highway infrastructure maintenance contracts throughout the United States. Our system approach to maintenance management is unparalleled in our industry. We know how to identify and implement innovative solutions for our client's toughest challenges.

General Summary of the Position:

The Software Engineer is responsible for designing, building, testing, and supporting the Firm's next-generation Computer Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and its supporting infrastructure. Reporting to the Lead Software Engineer and collaborating with the Director of Engineering Technology, this position owns software components end to end - from design through development, testing, deployment, monitoring, and production support - across a three-layer geospatial (Esri ArcGIS), work-management, and agentic-AI platform that serves the Firm's highway and infrastructure maintenance operations. The Software Engineer works as part of a small, AI-native engineering team in which each engineer is equipped with AI coding tools as a force-multiplier rather than a side tool, and is expected to contribute to architecture and engineering standards rather than simply follow them. It is required to have a technical background in computer science, software engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience. The ideal candidate is a versatile generalist who writes robust, secure, well-tested code; is comfortable working across backend, data, integrations, and field-facing functionality; prioritizes reliability and security over interface polish; and thrives in a high-ownership environment. The position is remote-first and requires approximately 30% travel to project sites, field locations, and company or client offices.

Major Process Functions of the Position:

The position requires direct ownership and accountability of the identified processes listed in the accountability table at the end of this description. These processes are organized by the Firm's Key Focus Areas and aligned with the Firm's Core Values. It is expected the position develops objective Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) directly from these process functions.
