What is a software engineer manager?

A Software Engineer Manager is a professional who leads a team of software engineers, overseeing the design, development, and deployment of software projects. They are responsible for managing team performance, setting goals, and ensuring that projects are completed on time and within budget. In addition to technical expertise, they also handle hiring, mentoring, and career development of team members. Software Engineer Managers often collaborate with other departments to align technical solutions with business objectives. Their role combines leadership, project management, and deep technical knowledge.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software engineer manager?

To thrive as a Software Engineer Manager, you need a solid background in software development, team leadership experience, and often a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira), version control systems (such as Git), and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure) is typically required, along with relevant certifications. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and mentoring abilities help you build effective teams and drive project success. These skills ensure you can lead technical initiatives, foster collaboration, and deliver high-quality software solutions in dynamic environments.

What are some common challenges faced by software engineer managers when transitioning from an individual contributor role?

Software Engineer Managers often find the shift from coding-focused work to leadership responsibilities challenging. Instead of primarily writing code, their days are filled with mentoring team members, managing project timelines, and facilitating communication between technical and non-technical stakeholders. Balancing technical oversight with people management, and learning to delegate effectively, are critical skills to develop. Additionally, they must stay current with technology trends while focusing on team growth and performance.

Additional factors considered in determining base salary include (but are not limited to) position responsibilities, individual education/qualifications, general and role-specific experience, knowledge, skills and other abilities, as well as internal equity, geographic location, and alignment with market data.

This position is based in-office with a remote option on Fridays.

The Company

Based in Charlottesville, Virginia, Investure was founded in 2003 to serve as the outsourced investment office to a select number of non-profit endowments and private foundations. Managing assets of approximately $22 billion (as of January 2026), Investure is responsible for portfolio management, asset allocation, and manager selection investing across a number of asset classes, including fixed income and credit, global public equities, alternative investments (e.g., hedge funds, private equity, venture), and real assets.

Investure has a fast-paced culture where there is a vast opportunity for learning and strong expectation of teamwork, collegiality, and integrity. We are a mission-driven organization that values continuous improvement, excellence, and employee engagement.

Essential Functions
  • Design, build, test, and maintain software applications that support investment, accounting, reporting, and data analysis workflows.
  • Work with relational databases to model, query, analyze, and transform financial and time-series data.
  • Partner directly with investment, accounting, and operations colleagues who use internally built software applications to learn their workflows, translate their needs into requirements, and confirm that what gets built works for them.
  • Gather user feedback after delivery and iterate on it, explaining technical tradeoffs and constraints in terms non-technical partners can act on.
  • Apply object-oriented design principles to create maintainable, extensible, and reliable systems.
  • Troubleshoot and improve existing applications, data pipelines, integrations, and reporting processes.
  • Use AI-assisted coding tools such as Codex, Claude, or similar platforms to accelerate development while maintaining strong engineering judgment, security awareness, and code quality.
  • Participate in code reviews, technical design discussions, testing, documentation, and ongoing system support.

Responsibilities and title will ultimately be commensurate with the professional's experience and demonstrated faculties and judgment.

Education, Experience & Skills
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • At least 3 years of professional experience building production software for asset management, portfolio management, investment operations, accounting systems, or a closely related financial domain.
  • Has designed and maintained relational data models in production, including writing and tuning SQL against sizable data sets and preserving data integrity as requirements changed.
  • Built or supported systems handling time-series and financial data where historical accuracy, effective dating, and reporting consistency were hard requirements.
  • Track record of applying object-oriented design to systems that stayed maintainable and extensible as they grew.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail, with a demonstrated ability to learn complex financial and operational workflows quickly.
  • Has worked directly with non-technical users to scope, build, and refine tools those users went on to adopt, with clear verbal and written communication throughout.
  • Day-to-day use of AI-assisted coding tools such as Codex, Claude, or similar assistants, with sound judgment about where they help and where they do not.
  • Has owned work end to end on a small engineering team, from requirements through deployment and ongoing support, with an understanding of both the technology and the business context.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver on tight timelines while also producing systems that are maintainable, secure, tested, and operationally durable.
  • Experience with C#, Python, and React preferred.
