What is a software engineer manager?

A Software Engineer Manager is a professional who leads a team of software engineers, overseeing the design, development, and deployment of software projects. They are responsible for managing team performance, setting goals, and ensuring that projects are completed on time and within budget. In addition to technical expertise, they also handle hiring, mentoring, and career development of team members. Software Engineer Managers often collaborate with other departments to align technical solutions with business objectives. Their role combines leadership, project management, and deep technical knowledge.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software engineer manager?

To thrive as a Software Engineer Manager, you need a solid background in software development, team leadership experience, and often a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira), version control systems (such as Git), and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure) is typically required, along with relevant certifications. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and mentoring abilities help you build effective teams and drive project success. These skills ensure you can lead technical initiatives, foster collaboration, and deliver high-quality software solutions in dynamic environments.

What are some common challenges faced by software engineer managers when transitioning from an individual contributor role?

Software Engineer Managers often find the shift from coding-focused work to leadership responsibilities challenging. Instead of primarily writing code, their days are filled with mentoring team members, managing project timelines, and facilitating communication between technical and non-technical stakeholders. Balancing technical oversight with people management, and learning to delegate effectively, are critical skills to develop. Additionally, they must stay current with technology trends while focusing on team growth and performance.

Our inspiring and caring environment forms a global community that celebrates diversity and individuality. We encourage you to step beyond your comfort zone, offering resources and flexibility to foster your professional and personal growth, all while valuing your unique contributions.

At Siemens Healthineers, we are seeking a Staff Systems Engineer to lead the definition, integration, and delivery of complex medical imaging systems. This role is ideal for an experienced systems engineer who enjoys solving multidisciplinary challenges, collaborating across global teams, and driving innovative products from concept through commercialization.

As a Staff Systems Engineer, you will serve as the technical leader responsible for translating clinical and customer needs into robust system solutions while ensuring seamless integration across hardware, software, and clinical workflows.

You are responsible for:

  • Leading the end-to-end systems engineering activities for new product development programs, maintaining ownership of system functionality throughout the development lifecycle.

  • Collaborating with clinical, service, manufacturing, product management, regulatory, and engineering teams to elicit and define high-quality system requirements.

  • Translating user, clinical, and business needs into detailed, traceable system requirements and technical specifications.

  • Driving system architecture, functional decomposition, and interface definition across complex hardware and software subsystems.

  • Identifying, assessing, and mitigating technical risks while proactively driving resolution strategies throughout development.

  • Leading system integration activities across globally distributed engineering teams to ensure reliable and scalable product performance.

  • Defining and supporting system-level verification and validation strategies to ensure products meet customer expectations, regulatory requirements, and clinical needs.

  • Performing system-level analyses, including safety risk assessments, to support compliance with applicable medical device regulations.

  • Championing both technical excellence and clinical effectiveness by ensuring products deliver meaningful value to healthcare providers and patients.

  • Partnering with multidisciplinary engineering teams to bring innovative technologies from concept into commercially successful medical imaging products.

This position may be a great fit if you have:

  • Strong knowledge of systems engineering principles and product development methodologies.

  • Hands-on experience integrating complex hardware and software systems.

  • Experience working across multidisciplinary teams in rapidly evolving technical environments.

  • The ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Experience developing and executing system-level verification and validation activities.

  • Experience performing system safety and risk analyses (FMEA, hazard analysis, or similar).

  • Experience leading technical discussions and influencing cross-functional teams.

  • A strong understanding of medical imaging systems, medical physics, or diagnostic imaging workflows.

  • Experience developing products within highly regulated industries such as medical devices, aerospace, automotive, or similar.

  • Familiarity with FDA 510(k), IEC 60601, ISO 14971, ISO 13485, or comparable regulatory standards is preferred.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Systems Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related engineering discipline.

  • 8+ years of engineering experience developing complex hardware and software products.

  • 5+ years of experience in systems engineering, product analysis, requirements engineering, or system architecture.

  • Strong background in complex system integration involving both hardware and software.

  • Experience defining, managing, and tracing system requirements throughout the product development lifecycle.

  • Knowledge of clinical diagnostic imaging workflows and healthcare environments is highly desirable.

  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and technical leadership skills.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with experience collaborating across global engineering organizations.

  • Self-motivated team player who is equally comfortable working independently and leading cross-functional initiatives.

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative product development environment.

  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally on an occasional basis (less than 5%).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in an engineering or technical discipline.

  • Experience with diagnostic imaging systems (CT, MR, PET, SPECT, X-ray, Ultrasound) or other complex medical devices.

  • Experience with model-based systems engineering (MBSE), SysML, or similar systems engineering tools.

  • Experience supporting regulatory submissions or product commercialization efforts.

  • Familiarity with Agile development methodologies and systems engineering best practices.
