Job description

Principal Software Engineer
Posting Start Date: 6/16/26
Job Location (Short): Tucson, Arizona, USA, 85706
Requisition ID: 32777
Onsite or Remote: Onsite Position
Shape the Future of Mining with Komatsu Mining Technology Solutions: At Komatsu Mining Technology Solutions, we're not just talking about progress and innovation - we're making it happen. Our cutting-edge Modular brand solutions are powering mines worldwide, driving efficiency and sustainability in ways that seemed impossible just years ago.
X
Job Purpose
At Komatsu, we're solving problems most software engineers will never encounter.
Every day, our software directs fleets of autonomous haul trucks weighing hundreds of tons as they move millions of tons of material across some of the largest and most remote mining operations on Earth.
These are not simulations.
These are not prototypes.
These are production autonomous systems operating 24/7 in harsh, dynamic environments where safety, reliability, and performance matter.
We are looking for a Principal Software Engineer to help shape the future of FrontRunner, the world's leading autonomous haulage platform.
We are not looking for someone who has advised on large systems. We are looking for someone who has personally delivered them.
Travel Requirements
Up to 25%.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
What You'll Do:
  • Deliver large, complex software systems that operate in production and create measurable customer value.
  • Own outcomes, not just designs, recommendations, or technical direction.
  • Drive execution across multiple teams, removing obstacles and creating clarity where complexity and ambiguity exist.
  • Raise the technical bar through hands-on leadership, mentorship, and engineering excellence.

Required Skills
  • Demonstrated history of delivering large-scale software systems to customers, including ownership from concept through production deployment and operational support.
  • 10+ years of professional software engineering experience.
  • Strong software design and development experience, including Java and distributed systems.
  • Experience mentoring senior engineers and technical leaders.
  • Strong communication skills with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ensure the quality and reliability of software through rigorous testing and code reviews.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation to support ongoing development and maintenance.
  • Manage project timelines and deliverables, ensuring projects are completed on time and within budget.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement and technical excellence within the team.

Desired Skills
  • Autonomous systems, robotics, or industrial automation.
  • Distributed control systems.
  • Real-time software systems.
  • Networking and distributed application debugging.
  • Experience working in operationally critical environments.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.

Why Komatsu:
This is an opportunity to help define the future of industrial autonomy.
Your work will directly influence autonomous vehicles operating around the world.
You will work at the intersection of software, autonomy, operations, networking, and large-scale industrial systems.
The problems are difficult.
The expectations are high.

If you've successfully delivered large-scale systems and are looking for a challenge worthy of your experience, we'd like to talk.
