What is a software engineer internship?

A Software Engineer Internship is a temporary position where students or entry-level professionals gain hands-on experience in software development. Interns typically work on real projects, write code, debug issues, and collaborate with engineering teams. The internship helps develop technical skills, knowledge of software development processes, and familiarity with industry tools. It also provides networking opportunities and can lead to full-time job offers.

What kinds of projects or tasks do software engineer interns typically work on during their internship?

Software Engineer Interns are often assigned to real-world projects that may include developing new features, fixing bugs, writing automated tests, or improving documentation. They usually work as part of a development team under the mentorship of experienced engineers, which allows them to participate in code reviews, agile meetings, and collaborative problem-solving sessions. The exact responsibilities may vary, but interns are regularly exposed to the full software development lifecycle and are encouraged to ask questions and contribute ideas. This hands-on experience not only builds technical skills but also prepares interns for full-time roles after graduation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the software engineer internship position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Engineer Intern, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Java, Python, or C++), algorithms, data structures, and typically be pursuing or have a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and sometimes issue tracking tools is often expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, a willingness to learn, and effective communication are key soft skills that help interns excel in collaborative environments. These skills ensure interns can contribute meaningfully to technical projects, integrate well with engineering teams, and grow rapidly within the organization.

Job description

About Ping Identity:

At Ping Identity, we believe in making digital experiences both secure and seamless for all users, without compromise. We call this digital freedom. And it's not just something we provide our customers. It's something that inspires our company. People don't come here to join a culture that's built on digital freedom. They come to cultivate it.

Our intelligent, cloud identity platform lets people shop, work, bank, and interact wherever and however they want. Without friction. Without fear.

While protecting digital identities is at the core of our technology, protecting individual identities is at the core of our culture. We champion every identity. One of our core values, Respect Individuality, reminds us to celebrate differences so you are empowered to bring your authentic self to work.

We're headquartered in Denver, Colorado and we have offices and employees around the globe. We serve the largest, most demanding enterprises worldwide, including more than half of the Fortune 100. At Ping Identity, we're changing the way people and businesses think about cybersecurity, digital experiences, and identity and access management.

Join our team:

Join the PingOne SSO team within the PingOne Multi-Tenant SaaS product development organization. This team builds, enhances, and operates PingOne Authentication and SSO as a market-leading service through continuous innovation and service performance improvements.

The team owns core customer-facing services and capabilities related to applications, resources, external identity providers, and sign-on policies. In practice, the team delivers the authentication and single sign-on layer of PingOne's multi-tenant cloud identity platform, including standards-based SSO for SaaS and custom applications using SAML, OIDC, and OAuth 2.0, plus integrations with external identity providers and application connectivity.

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer who can deliver high-quality production capabilities and work effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative, cross-functional, and global engineering organization.

The ideal candidate brings strong software engineering fundamentals, sound technical judgment, creative problem-solving ability, and a passion for innovation and experimentation. This role is well suited to someone who enjoys working across services, APIs, developer workflows, and user-facing capabilities, and who can use modern AI-assisted engineering tools pragmatically to accelerate discovery, design, and delivery.

What you'll do

  • Design, build, test, and deliver features across PingOne Authentication and SSO services in a high-scale multi-tenant SaaS environment.
  • Implement secure, reliable Java-based microservices and APIs that support authentication, authorization flows, SSO, federation, and application integrations.
  • Contribute to technical designs and engineering decisions that balance product requirements, system performance, reliability, security, and operational simplicity.
  • Partner closely with Product Management, Architecture, UX, SRE, and peer engineering teams to shape solutions from discovery through production rollout.
  • Improve service resilience, observability, operability, and deployment safety for mission-critical customer-facing services.
  • Contribute to engineering quality through strong testing, automation, code reviews, and maintainable implementation practices in a continuous deployment environment.
  • Use modern engineering and AI-assisted development practices to improve team effectiveness, quality, and delivery speed.
  • Participate in the team's on-call rotation and help lead incident response, root-cause analysis, and follow-through actions for production issues.
Essential Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of OIDC, SAML, and WS-Fed, including experience with SSO/federation integrations, protocol troubleshooting, and identity provider/service provider configuration.
  • Significant hands-on software engineering experience building and deploying highly scalable, high-performance cloud services, ideally in a multi-tenant SaaS environment.
  • Demonstrated Senior-level Java development experience and fluency with object-oriented design and modern engineering practices.
  • Experience in UI development with having ReactJS preferred.
  • Experience designing and building microservices and REST APIs, ideally using Spring or similar frameworks.
  • Strong technical judgment and a track record of contributing to technical designs, proof-of-concept work, and architecture discussions.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, with a proven ability to work effectively across a large, globally distributed engineering organization with many teams.
  • Experience operating or supporting production SaaS systems, including on-call responsibilities and incident response.
  • Comfortable working with Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, and modern build and delivery tooling.

Nice to have

  • Experience evaluating or building capabilities related to AI agents, agent identity, non-human identity, MCP, or adjacent integration concepts.
  • Familiarity with Cassandra, Kafka, and event-driven distributed systems.
  • Experience working across multiple codebases, teams, or product areas to ship cohesive outcomes
  • Familiarity with secure coding practices, OWASP guidance, and adjacent security technologies such as PKI, cryptography, and certificate/key management.
