What are some common challenges software engineers face when collaborating on large projects?

Software engineers working on large projects often encounter challenges related to coordinating effectively with cross-functional teams, managing code integration, and maintaining clear communication. It's common to deal with merge conflicts, overlapping responsibilities, and aligning on technical standards and project timelines. To overcome these challenges, engineers typically use version control systems, participate in regular stand-up meetings, and follow established agile practices. Proactively asking questions and documenting processes can also help ensure smooth collaboration and project success.

What are Software Engineers?

Software Engineers are professionals who design, develop, test, and maintain software applications or systems. They apply engineering principles and systematic methods to create reliable and efficient software solutions that meet user needs. No matter their individual role, each of our employees plays a vital part in bringing SiriusXM's vision to life every day.

SiriusXM is the leading audio entertainment company in North America, and the premier programmer and platform for subscription and digital advertising-supported audio products. SiriusXM's platforms collectively reach approximately 150 million listeners, the largest digital audio audience across paid and free tiers in North America, and deliver music, sports, talk, news, comedy, entertainment and podcasts. Pandora, a subsidiary of SiriusXM, is the largest ad-supported audio entertainment streaming service in the U.S. SiriusXM's subsidiaries Simplecast and AdsWizz make it a leader in podcast hosting, production, distribution, analytics and monetization. The Company's advertising sales organization, which operates as SiriusXM Media, leverages its scale, cross-platform sales organization and ad tech capabilities to deliver results for audio creators and advertisers. How you'll make an impact:

The Platform Engineering team is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to help further our vision of making it effortless for SiriusXM technologists to build, deploy, and operate the software that drives our business. In this role, you will be responsible for developing reusable platform components, streamlining cloud infrastructure management, driving developer productivity across the organization, and working directly with internal development teams to help them be successful in adopting the platform.

As a senior member of the team, you will promote standardization and simplify cloud-native development by developing CDK libraries and Infrastructure-as-Code patterns that encapsulate SiriusXM's infrastructure standards, while also providing expert guidance and assistance to internal developer teams. You will also build and enhance support tooling by incorporating AI solutions to enable more self-service capabilities, empowering developers to troubleshoot and resolve issues autonomously, ultimately improving overall developer productivity and experience.

What you'll do:

  • Write high-quality, maintainable code that enhances the platform's tooling and infrastructure.

  • Perform code reviews to ensure adherence to best practices and maintain code quality across the team.

  • Author and review technical design documents to outline and refine the architectural direction and implementation details.

  • Collaborate on the development and maintenance of shared components and libraries to standardize infrastructure creation and streamline development efforts.

  • Collaborate with product managers to review user experience and product requirements, ensuring alignment with engineering goals.

  • Contribute to the development and support of general developer tooling to enhance productivity.

  • Provide architectural guidance and support to the teams building on the platform.

  • Work with FinOps to manage and optimize the cost of platform engineering tools and services.

  • Integrate AI-driven tooling into the platform to enhance efficiency, reliability, and scalability, leveraging AI to optimize infrastructure management, automated processes, and operational workflows.

What you'll need:

  • 5+ years of experience as a Software Engineer or related technical role (e.g. SRE, DevOps Engineer, Cloud Engineer).

  • Have played a major role in large software development projects in the cloud (preferably AWS).

  • Fluency in at least two programming languages.

  • Experience managing cloud infrastructure with infrastructure as code (preferably CDK and CloudFormation).

  • Experience building and maintaining modular, reusable software libraries or APIs.

  • Strong understanding of software deployment pipelines (preferably via GitHub Actions) and software release management.

  • Passion for improving developer experience and productivity.

  • Exceptional communication and collaboration skills.

  • Extra credit:

    • Familiarity with using Datadog or other observability platforms.

    • AWS professional or associate certifications.

    • Experience with TypeScript and/or Python.

  • Must have the legal right to work in the U.S.

At SiriusXM, we carefully consider a wide range of factors when determining compensation, including your background and experience. These considerations can cause your compensation to vary. We expect the base salary for this position to be in the range of $100,800 to $170,000 and will depend on your skills, qualifications, and experience. Additionally, this role might be eligible for discretionary short-term and long-term incentives. We encourage all interested candidates to apply.

Our goal at SiriusXM is to provide and maintain a work environment that fosters mutual respect, professionalism and cooperation. SiriusXM is an equal opportunity employer that does not discriminate on the basis of actual or perceived race, creed, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, alienage or citizenship status, age, disability or handicap, sex, gender identity, marital status, familial status, veteran status, sexual orientation or any other characteristic protected by applicable federal, state or local laws.

The requirements and duties described above may be modified or waived by the Company in its sole discretion without notice.
