What is a software engineer CPT OPT?

Software Engineer CPT (Curricular Practical Training) and OPT (Optional Practical Training) positions are job roles specifically for international students in the United States on F-1 visas. CPT allows students to work in jobs related to their field of study while still enrolled in school, whereas OPT enables them to gain work experience after graduation. These roles typically involve software development, coding, and problem-solving tasks in a professional setting. Employers often provide opportunities for students to apply their academic knowledge in real-world software engineering projects, helping them build practical skills for their future careers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software engineer CPT OPT?

To thrive as a Software Engineer on CPT/OPT, you need a solid background in computer science fundamentals, programming languages (such as Java, Python, or C++), and typically a related degree. Familiarity with development tools like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), version control systems, and knowledge of software frameworks is essential, with internships or certifications adding value. Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and effective teamwork set candidates apart in collaborative and fast-changing tech environments. These skills and qualifications are crucial for delivering high-quality software solutions and integrating smoothly into diverse engineering teams.

What are common challenges faced by software engineers working under CPT or OPT status, and how can they overcome them?

Software Engineers on CPT (Curricular Practical Training) or OPT (Optional Practical Training) often face unique challenges such as navigating work authorization timelines, adapting quickly to new work cultures, and ensuring compliance with visa regulations. It's important to maintain proactive communication with both your employer and university's international office regarding work hours and documentation. Building strong technical skills, seeking mentorship, and staying updated on immigration policies can help you excel in your role and plan for potential long-term opportunities, such as H-1B sponsorship.

This position is fully remote for candidates residing within the U.S. West Region: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.
The Power Systems Controls Application Engineer will collaborate with Eaton's construction sales and field services sales teams to provide customers with automation solutions contained in Eaton switchgear. This role is responsible for driving growth of the PSC business by developing technical solutions, cost estimates, and detailed proposals for automatic transfer schemes, generator paralleling controls, load shed, and MicroGrid applications (Battery Energy Storage Systems and Photo Voltaic Systems).
The expected annual salary range for this role is $97,000 - $137,000 a year. This position is also eligible for a variable incentive program.
Please note the salary information shown above is a general guideline only. Salaries are based upon candidate skills, experience, and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.
What you'll do:
The Power Systems Controls (PSC) group is a full-service automation team with expertise in the design, engineering, and commissioning of automation solutions for commercial, industrial, and utility power systems. Our team of engineers and technicians supports a wide range of power system applications, delivering innovative control solutions that help our customers improve reliability, efficiency, and operational performance.
We are seeking a self-motivated engineer who thrives on technical problem-solving and can effectively manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. This role requires balancing simultaneous requests from sales engineers, customers, and other stakeholders while developing technical and commercial solutions that drive business growth. Strong commercial acumen, technical expertise, and organizational skills are critical to success.
Because much of the work is performed through remote collaboration with customers, sales teams, and internal partners, the ideal candidate will be a proactive communicator who can build relationships, influence decisions, and navigate a highly collaborative organization.
  • Quote Power Systems Controls opportunities throughout the U.S. West Region (Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming) by reviewing customer specifications, bid documents, and developing customized technical and commercial proposals.
  • Develop technical and commercial proposals ranging in value from approximately $50,000 to $2 million.
  • Provide regular reporting and presentations on negotiation activities, market conditions, and business trends to support strategic decision-making.
  • Develop and maintain pricing for standard applications, integrate pricing into PSC quotation tools, and ensure all proposals are properly documented and organized.
  • Support the sales-to-execution process by assisting with order entry, project handoff to PSC engineers, and providing technical support to Eaton Application Engineers to influence customer and consulting engineer specifications.
  • Pursue ongoing professional development in emerging market opportunities, including Microgrids, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), Photovoltaic (PV) Systems, Generator Paralleling, and Brownfield Upgrades.
  • Work outside of standard business hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed to meet customer bid deadlines.

Qualifications:
Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Electrical Engineering preferred) OR, in lieu of a degree, a minimum of 7 years of hands-on field service, project management, and/or proposal generation experience related to maintaining and modernizing electrical power distribution systems
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in electrical industry application engineering, proposal development, project engineering, and programming related to power system applications
  • Must currently reside within Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, or Wyoming
  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 25%, primarily within the U.S. West Region
  • Possess and maintain a valid and unrestricted driver's license
  • Submit to periodic customer required background and drug screenings
  • Must be able to work in the United States without corporate sponsorship now and within the future. Eaton will not consider applicants for employment immigration sponsorship or support for this position. This means that Eaton will not support any CPT, OPT, or STEM OPT plans, F-1 to H-1B, H-1B cap registration, O-1, E-3, TN status, I-485 job portability, etc.
  • Successfully complete and maintain compliance with Eaton's safety program and policy; This includes role-applicable portions of the EESS Qualified Electrical Worker (QEW) program and any required annual re-certifications thereafter

Preferred Qualifications & Skills
  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration
  • Knowledge of Eaton's organizational structure and experience collaborating on cross-functional projects with multiple Eaton departments and business units
  • Strong knowledge of automation and power management systems, including programmable logic controllers (PLCs), remote terminal units (RTUs), human-machine interface (HMI) software, multifunction protective relays, and relay-based monitoring and control systems
  • Strong understanding of multi-source and paralleling switchgear controls, power system automation, and associated engineering best practices
  • Familiarity with Eaton and competitor automation products, systems, and services
  • Strong computer proficiency and working knowledge of software applications used for engineering, proposal development, project execution, and reporting
  • Demonstrated knowledge of safety practices and procedures related to automation and power systems
  • Proven ability to build and maintain customer relationships, represent company interests, and deliver exceptional customer service
