What is a software engineer contract?

Software engineer contracts are agreements where software engineers are hired on a temporary basis to work on specific projects or for a set period of time, rather than as permanent employees. Contractors often work for multiple clients, are paid hourly or per project, and may have more flexible schedules. These contracts outline the scope of work, compensation, deadlines, and other terms. Contract software engineers are responsible for delivering quality code and meeting the requirements set by the client or organization. This working arrangement can offer more autonomy, but also less job security and benefits compared to full-time employment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software engineer contract?

To thrive as a Software Engineer Contract, you need strong programming skills, a solid understanding of software development methodologies, and a relevant degree or proven experience in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with source control systems (e.g., Git), cloud platforms, and proficiency in languages or frameworks required by the contract are crucial, as are any certifications in areas like AWS or Agile methodologies. Excellent problem-solving, adaptability, and communication skills help you quickly integrate with new teams and deliver results in diverse environments. These skills ensure you can efficiently contribute to projects, meet client expectations, and maintain professional flexibility across various assignments.

What are some common challenges faced by software engineers working on contract positions, and how can they be managed?

Software engineers on contract often face challenges such as quickly adapting to new codebases, understanding diverse team workflows, and managing changing project scopes. It's important to proactively communicate with team members, clarify project requirements early on, and stay organized to meet tight deadlines. Additionally, maintaining a strong personal workflow and being open to feedback can help contract engineers integrate more smoothly and deliver high-quality results within limited timeframes.

Job description

We are again working with a government entity in Austin Texas, to find a .NET developer to support an ongoing upgrade project.

*****You must live in Austin or be easily commutable to downtown Austin to be eligible for this role******

There are a number of inter-government projects and platform enhancements requiring support, so it should be a varied, and interesting assignment. They are also working on a portal project designed to upgrade the way the Government interacts with both internal and external partners. They are looking to move away from their traditional Client Services Systems and build slick portals to allow the information to run freely and give partners the best possible interactions.

The ideal candidate will be able to work autonomously on projects, have great communication skills, and be able to collaborate with a small team of Engineers.

They are moving to .Net 6 ( .Net Core ) but are currently working with .Net 5, and the database is SQL. We are looking for people who can work across the stack. ( .Net Core/C# and SQL )

Any JavaScript experience is well received, too, but the majority of the work is in the middleware and back end. ( They use React on the Front End.)

This will be a six-month contract initially with the possibility of extension. This position requires you to be on-site downtown in the Capitol building 5 days per week.

Skills/Experience

  • Back End Development
  • 3 years + of experience with .Net Core and/or C#
  • MVC
  • SQL

Bonus points

  • Any Government experience is welcome, but not essential.
  • JavaScript
  • Experience with Azure

Benefits

This is a great working environment with strong leadership and a fun team. You will also get visibility of other opportunities within the system that you may wish to transfer to once this project is finished. There will be parking available when on-site.

If this position is of interest, please can you forward your most updated resume highlighting your relevant skills and the W2 rate you are looking for?

This will be a W2 contract, and we can not sponsor or engage C2C
