What is a software engineer contract?

Software engineer contracts are agreements where software engineers are hired on a temporary basis to work on specific projects or for a set period of time, rather than as permanent employees. Contractors often work for multiple clients, are paid hourly or per project, and may have more flexible schedules. These contracts outline the scope of work, compensation, deadlines, and other terms. Contract software engineers are responsible for delivering quality code and meeting the requirements set by the client or organization. This working arrangement can offer more autonomy, but also less job security and benefits compared to full-time employment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software engineer contract?

To thrive as a Software Engineer Contract, you need strong programming skills, a solid understanding of software development methodologies, and a relevant degree or proven experience in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with source control systems (e.g., Git), cloud platforms, and proficiency in languages or frameworks required by the contract are crucial, as are any certifications in areas like AWS or Agile methodologies. Excellent problem-solving, adaptability, and communication skills help you quickly integrate with new teams and deliver results in diverse environments. These skills ensure you can efficiently contribute to projects, meet client expectations, and maintain professional flexibility across various assignments.

What are some common challenges faced by software engineers working on contract positions, and how can they be managed?

Software engineers on contract often face challenges such as quickly adapting to new codebases, understanding diverse team workflows, and managing changing project scopes. It's important to proactively communicate with team members, clarify project requirements early on, and stay organized to meet tight deadlines. Additionally, maintaining a strong personal workflow and being open to feedback can help contract engineers integrate more smoothly and deliver high-quality results within limited timeframes.

Job description

Senior Software Engineer - Mobile & Web
Contract (1-Year, Option to Convert) | Remote - CST Hours
Nearshore (Mexico)
About the Role
We're building a unified patient-facing digital platform for a large enterprise healthcare organization - and we need a Senior Software Engineer who owns both mobile and web. This isn't a mobile-only or web-only role. You'll be shipping React Native features and React web experiences as equal parts of your day-to-day, working inside a cross-functional squad that moves fast and expects senior-level judgment, not just senior-level execution.
If you've spent your career waiting for someone to hand you a ticket, this isn't the right fit. If you've been the person who figures out what needs to be built, pushes back when something doesn't make sense, and ships it cleanly - keep reading.
What You'll Be Building
  • Patient-facing mobile experiences in React Native across iOS and Android
  • React web applications as an equal contribution alongside mobile
  • API integrations and cross-system workflows as part of a full-stack squad
  • Clean, tested, production-ready code with thorough PR reviews
  • CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and observability practices that the whole team relies on

What We Expect From You
  • You work directly with Product - not just receiving requirements but shaping them. Story refinement, sprint estimation, feasibility pushback when needed.
  • You coordinate with other squads. You understand that your work affects other teams and you manage those dependencies proactively.
  • You contribute to architecture discussions. You have opinions about how systems should be designed and you can articulate the tradeoffs.
  • You own your delivery. Sprint commitments, production readiness, post-launch support - all yours.
  • You navigate ambiguity. When requirements are unclear you ask the right questions, not the wrong ones.

Required
  • 5+ years of software engineering experience
  • Production React Native mobile development - you've shipped apps to the App Store and Google Play
  • Production React web development - mobile and web in the same role, not one or the other
  • Advanced English - you're presenting tradeoffs to product stakeholders and coordinating with US-based engineering leads daily
  • Located in Mexico - nearshore, CST-aligned hours

Nice to Have
  • C# and Azure experience
  • Healthcare or regulated industry background
  • Epic / EHR / FHIR integration experience
  • AI-assisted development tools (GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, agent workflows)
  • Interest in growing into a technical or engineering lead role
