What is a software engineer contract?

Software engineer contracts are agreements where software engineers are hired on a temporary basis to work on specific projects or for a set period of time, rather than as permanent employees. Contractors often work for multiple clients, are paid hourly or per project, and may have more flexible schedules. These contracts outline the scope of work, compensation, deadlines, and other terms. Contract software engineers are responsible for delivering quality code and meeting the requirements set by the client or organization. This working arrangement can offer more autonomy, but also less job security and benefits compared to full-time employment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software engineer contract?

To thrive as a Software Engineer Contract, you need strong programming skills, a solid understanding of software development methodologies, and a relevant degree or proven experience in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with source control systems (e.g., Git), cloud platforms, and proficiency in languages or frameworks required by the contract are crucial, as are any certifications in areas like AWS or Agile methodologies. Excellent problem-solving, adaptability, and communication skills help you quickly integrate with new teams and deliver results in diverse environments. These skills ensure you can efficiently contribute to projects, meet client expectations, and maintain professional flexibility across various assignments.

What is the difference between Software Engineer Contract vs Software Engineer Full-Time?

AspectSoftware Engineer ContractSoftware Engineer Full-Time
Employment TypeTemporary, project-basedPermanent, ongoing
Work EnvironmentTypically freelance or agency-basedCompany offices or remote

In summary, Software Engineer Contract roles are temporary positions focused on specific projects, often with fewer benefits, while Software Engineer Full-Time roles offer permanent employment with comprehensive benefits. Both roles require similar skills and credentials but differ mainly in employment stability and perks.

What are some common challenges faced by software engineers working on contract positions, and how can they be managed?

Software engineers on contract often face challenges such as quickly adapting to new codebases, understanding diverse team workflows, and managing changing project scopes. It's important to proactively communicate with team members, clarify project requirements early on, and stay organized to meet tight deadlines. Additionally, maintaining a strong personal workflow and being open to feedback can help contract engineers integrate more smoothly and deliver high-quality results within limited timeframes.

Job description

Position Overview
We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our Commerce & Integrations team - a backend engineer who loves building the systems that make complex B2B transactions work reliably at scale. You'll own the integration layer between our eCommerce platform and a network of Dealer Management Systems (DMS), write clean API contracts, and help shape how our backend evolves.
This is a hands-on individual contributor role. About 70% of your time is writing, testing, and shipping production backend code. The remaining 30% is spent collaborating with the team - code reviews, mentoring junior engineers, and working with the Product Owner and Platform Architect to align on direction.
Responsibilities
WHAT YOU'LL BUILD
Backend Code & API Development
  • Write, test, and ship production backend code every sprint - REST API endpoints, business logic, and integration components.
  • Design and implement order workflow logic (state machines) that automates order-to-cash flows, returns processing, and core-charge handling.
  • Own backend user stories end-to-end: design, implementation, unit and integration tests, PR review, and deployment.
  • Diagnose and resolve backend performance issues, API latency spikes, and data consistency problems.

Integrations & Data Orchestration
  • Build and maintain integrations between our commerce platform and Dealer Management Systems (CDK, Procede, SAP, Karmak) - API adapters, data mappers, and retry/failure handling.
  • Implement product data ingestion pipelines from PIM and fitment data sources into the commerce platform, including validation and indexing logic.
  • Implement distributed transaction patterns (e.g., Saga) to keep data consistent across commerce, DMS, and Azure integration layers.
  • Identify and resolve data mismatches between commerce and ERP systems, with clear audit trails.

Infrastructure & Delivery
  • Contribute to CI/CD pipelines (Azure Pipelines or equivalent) - automated testing, environment promotion, and deployment reliability.
  • Work with Docker-based local environments and Kubernetes/AKS deployment configs for backend services.
  • Design and optimize database schemas for B2B commerce data - tiered pricing, account hierarchies, core charge ledgers, and order state history.
  • Instrument backend services with logging, tracing, and alerting so issues surface before they reach customers.

Collaboration & Code Quality
  • Review pull requests with a focus on correctness, performance, and maintainability - not just style.
  • Mentor 1-2 junior or mid-level engineers through pair programming and code walkthroughs.
  • Partner with the Platform Architect to ensure API contracts and DMS integration interfaces are versioned and future-proof.
  • Use AI-assisted coding tools (Copilot, Claude Code, or similar) to move faster on boilerplate, test generation, and data mapping.

Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree and at least 5 years of software engineer experience
  • At least 1 years of lead experience

OR
  • Master's degree and at least 3 years of software engineer experience
  • At least 1 years of lead experience

OR
  • At least 8 years of software engineer experience
  • At least 1 years of lead experience

Additional Requirements
  • Qualified candidates, excluding current employees, must be legally authorized on an unrestricted basis (US Citizen, Legal Permanent Resident, Refugee or Asylee) to be employed in the United States. We do not anticipate providing employment related work sponsorship for this position (e.g., H-1B status)
  • 5+ years of backend software engineering with production PHP experience
  • Strong REST API design and implementation - you've built integrations between systems, not just consumed them
  • Comfort working with relational databases (MySQL or PostgreSQL) - schema design, query optimization, and migrations
  • Experience with integration patterns: adapters, data mapping, retry logic, and failure handling across distributed systems
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and Docker-based development environments
  • Clear written and verbal communication - able to explain backend trade-offs to product and business stakeholders

Desired Skills
  • Experience with Spryker Cloud Commerce OS - modules, Zed business logic, Glue API, or State Machines
  • Background in eCommerce platform development (Magento, Shopware, BigCommerce, or similar)
  • Knowledge of B2B commerce logic: tiered pricing, credit limits, core charge workflows, or order management systems
  • Hands-on experience with DMS/ERP platforms such as CDK, Procede, Karmak, or SAP
  • Experience with EDI or Punchout (cXML/OCI) B2B integration standards
  • Kubernetes/AKS deployment experience and cloud infrastructure (Azure preferred)
