As a software development manager, your primary responsibilities are to oversee software development teams and to act as a liaison between your teams and senior management. You hire and train new staff, manage and evaluate existing developers, provide guidance on the design and implementation of new software applications, and ensure that projects stay on schedule and within budget. You collaborate with upper-level management and your developers to make sure that new and existing software applications meet business objectives.

What does a software development manager do?

A Software Development Manager oversees teams of software engineers to ensure successful planning, development, and delivery of software projects. They coordinate project timelines, allocate resources, and facilitate communication between team members and stakeholders. Additionally, they mentor developers, set technical standards, and help align software initiatives with business objectives. Job description

About Stream Companies
Stream Companies is a full-service, fully integrated advertising agency built for brands that want to move forward. Founded in 1997 and headquartered in Malvern, Pennsylvania, we partner with clients to launch, position, and manage brands through both full-service relationships and project-based work.
We operate with an entrepreneurial mindset-collaborative, curious, and always pushing what's next. By combining strategic planning, creative development, media planning and buying, digital, interactive, television, production, and co-op management with cutting-edge technology, we deliver integrated solutions designed for today's marketing challenges.
About the role
Stream Companies seeking a proactive, hands-on Software Development Manager to serve as a key engineering leader for our industry-leading marketing technology (MarTech) SaaS platform, which empowers automotive retailers and car dealerships to better engage, convert, and serve modern car shoppers.
Working under the direct guidance of the VP of Product, you will be one of two peer engineering managers responsible for driving overall platform delivery and next-gen data/AI capabilities.
In this role, you will lead with a true "player-coach" mindset-taking strategic direction from executive leadership while actively managing engineers, contributing to the codebase, and collaborating closely with your peer manager to ensure cohesive platform architecture and unified release cycles.
What you'll do
  • People Management & Team Execution: Manage and mentor engineers, conduct regular 1-on-1s, and foster a collaborative team culture focused on delivering value to automotive dealers
  • Player-Coach Technical Build: Actively participate in the build. You aren't just managing-you are in the code, shipping features, building POCs, and helping the team solve complex MarTech and web-scale engineering challenges
  • Data & AI Implementation: Execute the expansion of generative AI features and our data ecosystem under direction from leadership. Help build out platform capabilities that enhance dealership-to-buyer interactions
  • Disciplined Agile Delivery: Drive operational excellence across both build teams. Keep teams focused and accountable to strict 2-week sprint cycles, removing daily blockers, sizing work accurately, and ensuring high-quality, continuous delivery
  • VP & Cross-Functional Alignment: Work closely with the VP, taking direct strategic direction to execute roadmap priorities and ensure tight frontend-to-backend integration with UX/UI design

Qualifications
Technical Stack & Ecosystem:
To be successful, you must have strong, practical experience building and maintaining web applications within our specific tech stack
  • Core Application Stack: PHP, Laravel, and Vue.js 3.0
  • Cloud Infrastructure: AWS (emphasis on serverless architecture and Lambdas)
  • Data & AI Ecosystem: Claude/Anthropic, Snowflake

Skills and experience:
  • Engineering & People Leadership: 4+ years of software engineering experience, including 2+ years in a hands-on people management role overseeing software developers, ideally within a B2B SaaS or MarTech environment
  • Automotive Retail / MarTech Familiarity (Plus): Prior experience building software for automotive dealerships, retail technology, or customer-facing marketing platforms is a strong plus
  • Player-Coach Capability: Demonstrated experience balancing direct management responsibilities with writing code, conducting technical reviews, and actively building features
  • Practical Snowflake & AI Exposure (Plus): Hands-on experience working with Snowflake beyond basic warehousing, including exposure to building data pipelines and integrating AI/LLM components (e.g., RAG, vector embeddings)
  • Agile Sprint Management: Proven ability to lead development teams through disciplined 2-week agile sprints, keeping velocity predictable and removing blockers
  • Collaborative Communicator: Ability to take direct guidance from executive leadership, translate product requirements into clear developer tasks, and collaborate across functional teams
