What is a software development engineer in test?

A Software Development Engineer In Test (SDET) is a professional who combines software development skills with expertise in testing to ensure the quality of software products. SDETs design, develop, and maintain automated test frameworks, write test scripts, and work closely with developers to identify and resolve defects early in the software development lifecycle. They play a critical role in integrating testing into the development process, improving test coverage, and enabling continuous integration and delivery. SDETs often have strong programming abilities and a deep understanding of both software engineering and quality assurance best practices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software development engineer in test?

To thrive as a Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET), you need a solid background in software engineering principles, programming skills (often in languages like Java, Python, or C#), and a strong understanding of testing methodologies. Familiarity with automated testing frameworks (such as Selenium, JUnit, or TestNG), CI/CD tools, and sometimes certifications like ISTQB are typically required. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills that help SDETs collaborate with developers and identify issues efficiently. These skills are crucial to ensure robust, scalable, and high-quality software products through efficient test design and automation.

How does a software development engineer in test typically collaborate with developers and QA teams during the software development lifecycle?

As an SDET, you'll work closely with both software developers and quality assurance teams throughout the development process. Your role involves participating in design and code reviews to ensure testability, creating automated test frameworks, and writing test cases alongside developers. You'll also help identify bugs early, contribute to continuous integration pipelines, and facilitate communication between development and QA to ensure high-quality releases. This collaborative environment allows you to bridge the gap between coding and testing, making you a key player in delivering reliable software.

Job description

AdvancedMD offers a unified cloud suite of medical office software, including practice management, EHRs, and patient engagement tools. We are seeking a passionate Associate Quality Engineer – Test Automation to build reliable automated testing for our patient‑engagement and medical practice software.

Job Overview

As an Associate Quality Engineer, you will design, develop, and maintain Playwright test suites, integrate them into CI/CD pipelines, and work closely with developers and product teams in a fast‑paced Agile environment. You will leverage AI tools to accelerate test development, identify edge cases, and ensure high confidence and coverage across our platform.

Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and execute functional, integration, and regression test cases using an Agile delivery model.
  • Develop and maintain automated test scripts using Playwright and AI tools, expanding coverage and hardening regression suites.
  • Integrate automated tests into CI/CD pipelines for automatic execution on commit, pull request, and release.
  • Triage and debug automated test failures, distinguishing real defects from flaky tests, and keep testing suites stable and trustworthy.
  • Use AI to analyze requirements, identify test scenarios, edge cases, and automation opportunities.
  • Perform API, UI, and backend validation with focus on test pyramid design.
  • Reproduce, isolate, and document defects with clear, actionable reports; then create tests to prevent recurrence.
  • Build and maintain test data, fixtures, mocks, and environments for reliable, repeatable automation.
  • Review requirements and designs to determine what should be automated and at which layer.
  • Track and report quality signals: test coverage, pass/fail trends, flake rate, and pipeline health.
  • Participate in sprint planning, grooming, and retrospectives; support release readiness and production validation.
  • Collaborate with developers on testability, code reviews, and shifting quality earlier in development.
  • Continuously learn and apply new automation tools, patterns, and techniques with guidance from senior engineers.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 1–2 years of experience in software development, test automation, or SDET work (internships and substantial academic/personal projects count).
  • Hands‑on experience with Playwright for end‑to‑end test automation.
  • Understanding of software testing fundamentals: test pyramid, types of testing, bug lifecycle, and test reliability.
  • Comfortable using AI coding tools (e.g., Claude, GitHub Copilot) to accelerate QA work.
  • Knowledge of API testing tools (Postman, REST clients).
  • Comfortable working in a modern IDE, especially Visual Studio Code with extensions and debugger.
  • Strong understanding of SDLC/Agile methodology.
  • Strong analytical and debugging skills with a careful eye for detail.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills and ability to document defects precisely.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Claude or similar AI‑assisted development environments.
  • Experience integrating tests into CI/CD tools (GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, Jenkins, GitLab CI).
  • Experience writing SQL and validating data or interest in automating data pipelines and database tests.
  • Familiarity with containerization (Docker) and ephemerally created test environments.
  • Exposure to performance or load testing tools.
  • Exposure to cloud systems or distributed architecture.
Benefits
  • Competitive compensation and total rewards package.
  • Comprehensive health, dental, vision, and life insurance.
  • Paid parental leave, daycare discounts, and adoption allowance.
  • Paid time off for family responsibilities and generous vacation allowance.
  • Employee assistance programs and onsite wellness facilities.
