What is a software development engineer in test?

A Software Development Engineer In Test (SDET) is a professional who combines software development skills with expertise in testing to ensure the quality of software products. SDETs design, develop, and maintain automated test frameworks, write test scripts, and work closely with developers to identify and resolve defects early in the software development lifecycle. They play a critical role in integrating testing into the development process, improving test coverage, and enabling continuous integration and delivery. SDETs often have strong programming abilities and a deep understanding of both software engineering and quality assurance best practices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software development engineer in test?

To thrive as a Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET), you need a solid background in software engineering principles, programming skills (often in languages like Java, Python, or C#), and a strong understanding of testing methodologies. Familiarity with automated testing frameworks (such as Selenium, JUnit, or TestNG), CI/CD tools, and sometimes certifications like ISTQB are typically required. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills that help SDETs collaborate with developers and identify issues efficiently. These skills are crucial to ensure robust, scalable, and high-quality software products through efficient test design and automation.

How does a software development engineer in test typically collaborate with developers and QA teams during the software development lifecycle?

As an SDET, you'll work closely with both software developers and quality assurance teams throughout the development process. Your role involves participating in design and code reviews to ensure testability, creating automated test frameworks, and writing test cases alongside developers. You'll also help identify bugs early, contribute to continuous integration pipelines, and facilitate communication between development and QA to ensure high-quality releases. This collaborative environment allows you to bridge the gap between coding and testing, making you a key player in delivering reliable software.

What is the difference between Software Development Engineer In Test vs Software Engineer?

Job description

Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET V)
Production Support Automation Strategy & AI Quality Engineering

Position Summary

The Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET V) serves as the senior technical leader for automation strategy, quality engineering, and AI-enabled testing within the Production Support organization. This role is responsible for establishing and driving automation direction, standards, frameworks, and quality engineering practices that improve software reliability, operational efficiency, production stability, and testing effectiveness. Operating under the strategic guidance and governance of the Zions Automation Center of Excellence (CoE), this position provides enterprise-level leadership in test automation architecture, Selenium Grid administration, AI-assisted quality engineering, DevOps integration, and quality assurance best practices.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, or equivalent experience.
  • 8+ years of experience in programming, test automation architecture, quality engineering, and the development of comprehensive test strategies.
  • Strong Agile, DevOps, and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) experience.
  • Demonstrated experience transitioning teams from legacy frameworks to modern, scalable test architectures.
  • Strong Agile, DevOps, and regression testing experience.
  • Combination of education and experience may satisfy requirements.

Core Responsibilities

  • Strategic Autonomy & Roadmapping:Drive proactive technology evaluation and independent road mapping for the organization's automation strategy, actively shaping the direction of the Automation Center of Excellence (CoE).
  • Embracing Next-Gen Architecture:Evaluate, adopt, and build highly scalable, modern test architectures using the best evolving tools in the industry rather than strictly maintaining legacy Java/Cucumber frameworks or building custom frameworks from scratch.
  • Continuous AI Adoption:Actively monitor industry trends and practically integrate AI tools into the testing lifecycle. Leverage AI for automated scenario generation, self-healing test scripts, synthetic data creation, and smart defect triage to keep engineering practices on the cutting edge.
  • Cloud & Containerization:Utilize Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud testing grids (e.g., BrowserStack) to design and execute highly parallel, scalable test environments.
  • Upstream Testing Practices:Champion shift-left testing, Behavior-Driven Development (BDD), and visual regression within the engineering phase to catch defects early, while ensuring seamless integration with downstream release verification.
  • Technical Change Agency:Actively advocate for new tools, modern practices, and technical change across technology, operations, and business teams, moving beyond standard coordination to drive true technical transformation.

Technical Expertise

  • Expertise inย Modern UI Automation, specifically testing dynamic architectures and web components (React, Angular, Shadow DOM).
  • Expertise in Selenium Grid Architecture and development.
  • Proficient in SQL and relational databases-Oracle, Teradata
  • Advanced experience with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes) and cloud-based execution platforms (BrowserStack, Sauce Labs, etc.).
  • Strong practical knowledge ofย AI-assisted testing tools, Python/Java/modern scripting languages, and DevOps pipelines (Git, Jenkins, CI/CD integration).
  • Expertise in API testing, microservices validation, and advanced data validation capabilities.
  • Strong analysis, project management, communication, and organizational skills.

Leadership Scope

  • Operates with significant strategic autonomy to evaluate technologies and set long-range organizational objectives for quality engineering.
  • Works on the most highly complex technical and business problems, developing innovative, forward-looking solutions.
  • Serves as an expert spokesperson, consultant, and technical change agent on specialized next-gen automation and AI testing initiatives.
