Job description

The Role

This is a summer internship opportunity in Norwood, MA from June 7, 2027 - August 20, 2026. Applicants must be available for the entire duration of the internship. Start date will be June 7, 2027.

Moderna's Applied Technologies team develops and deploys innovative automation, robotics, and digital solutions that enable faster, more reliable, and more scalable scientific and technical workflows.

As an Applied Technologies Intern, you will work alongside engineers and scientists to support the design, development, testing, and implementation of automation solutions used across Technical Development. You will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with laboratory automation, robotics, software, data, and systems engineering while contributing to a defined technical project with real-world impact.

This role is designed for a curious, hands-on learner who enjoys solving technical problems, working across disciplines, and translating ideas into practical solutions.

Here's What You'll Do

  • Contribute to a defined automation, robotics, or systems engineering project under the guidance of an AT engineer or scientist.
  • Support the development, configuration, and testing of laboratory automation systems, robotic platforms, instruments, or related software.
  • Assist with experimental execution, system characterization, troubleshooting, and collection of performance data.
  • Analyze test or experimental data and summarize findings to support engineering decisions.
  • Develop or modify scripts, workflows, automation methods, or simple software tools where appropriate.
  • Support preparation of test plans, technical documentation, diagrams, work instructions, and project summaries.
  • Participate in prototype development and evaluate potential improvements to system reliability, throughput, usability, or scalability.
  • Work collaboratively with scientists, engineers, automation specialists, and other Technical Development partners to understand user needs and technical requirements.
  • Apply good engineering and documentation practices, including appropriate use of version control and structured testing.
  • Present project progress, technical findings, and recommendations to the Applied Technologies team at the conclusion of the internship.
  • Learn about the application of automation, robotics, systems engineering, and digital technologies within biotechnology development.
  • Bring curiosity, initiative, and a willingness to learn as part of a team that values being Bold, Relentless, Curious, and Collaborative.

Here's What You'll Need (Basic Qualifications)

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor's or graduate degree in an engineering, computer science, bioengineering, robotics, automation, life sciences, or related technical discipline.
  • Completion of relevant coursework or project experience involving one or more of the following:
  • programming or scripting;
  • robotics or mechatronics;
  • laboratory automation;
  • electrical or mechanical systems;
  • systems engineering;
  • data analysis;
  • biological or laboratory sciences.
  • Demonstrated interest in applying engineering or digital technologies to scientific problems.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment.
  • Strong problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to document work clearly and communicate technical results.

Here's What You'll Bring to the Table (Preferred Qualifications)

  • GPA of 3.5 on a 4 scale or equivalent.
  • Hands-on academic, research, internship, maker-space, or personal project experience with automation or robotics.
  • Programming experience in Python, C#, JavaScript, MATLAB, or a similar language.
  • Experience working with laboratory instruments, liquid handlers, robotic systems, sensors, microcontrollers, or electromechanical systems.
  • Familiarity with CAD, Git/version control, data visualization, or engineering analysis tools.
  • Experience designing and executing experiments or structured technical tests.
  • Exposure to biological laboratory workflows or biotechnology/pharmaceutical development.
  • Interest in emerging technologies such as machine learning, computer vision, autonomous systems, or advanced robotics.

The salary range for this role is $20.00 - $60.00. This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An individual's position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, performance, and business or organizational needs. The successful candidate may be eligible for an annual discretionary bonus, other incentive compensation, or equity award, subject to company plan eligibility criteria and individual performance.
