What is a software developer?

A Software Developer is a professional who designs, builds, tests, and maintains computer programs or applications. They use programming languages to create software solutions that meet user needs, whether for desktop, mobile, or web platforms. Software Developers work closely with other team members such as designers, analysts, and testers to ensure the final product is functional, reliable, and user-friendly. Their responsibilities can range from writing code and fixing bugs to collaborating on system architecture and deploying updates.

What do software developers do?

Software developers design and create computer software programs and systems for their employer or client. Their job is to apply the principles of engineering, analytics, and computer science toward the development and testing of all kinds of software and applications. On a day-to-day basis, a software developer helps create and test software from start to finish. They discuss and analyze user requests and requirements, then research and brainstorm practical solutions to meet those needs, and determine the best course of action to create the application. As a software developer, you may develop an entirely new program or improve an existing one; you are responsible for a program’s overall framework and must design precise workflow charts that explain to programmers what code is needed for different aspects of the program.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Java, Python, or JavaScript, as well as a solid understanding of computer science fundamentals and a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with development tools such as Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and frameworks like React or .NET is typically required, along with knowledge of agile methodologies or certifications. Problem-solving ability, attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication are essential soft skills that help you excel in collaborative and fast-paced environments. These skills ensure you can build reliable, maintainable software and adapt to evolving project requirements and technologies.

What are some common challenges software developers face when working on team-based projects?

Software developers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with team members across different time zones, managing code integration from multiple contributors, and maintaining clear communication about project requirements. Effective use of version control systems like Git and regular participation in code reviews can help mitigate these issues. Additionally, adapting to evolving project goals and balancing technical debt with feature development are common hurdles that require strong collaboration and problem-solving skills.

Job description

Software Developer, Market Data Interfaces (MDI)
MDI team is seeking a Software Developer to join and contribute across the MDI platform, Alpha Data Platform (ADP) microservices, and quality automation. This role is suited for an engineer who is comfortable working across a large enterprise Java codebase and modern cloud-native services, while also taking strong ownership of automated quality, reliability, and production support. The successful candidate will help design, build, test, troubleshoot, and evolve real-time and batch processing solutions that support market data, reference data, and downstream integration workflows in a regulated financial technology environment.
This engineer will work as a member of an Agile Scrum team, partnering closely with product owners, QA, support, platform teams, and peer development teams. The role requires equal strength in software design, hands-on implementation, defect investigation, and test automation. It is not a pure feature-development role; it also includes operational ownership, cross-team collaboration, and continuous improvement of engineering practices.
Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, enhance, and maintain RTAPI components and related backend services used for real-time and batch data processing.
  • Build and support ADP microservices using event-driven and service-oriented patterns.
  • Implement user stories and defect fixes that meet acceptance criteria and Definition of Done without introducing unnecessary technical debt.
  • Troubleshoot complex functional and production issues across distributed services, legacy modules, and integration layers.
  • Perform root cause analysis for defects impacting internal users, support teams, and downstream systems.
  • Write clean, maintainable, well-tested Java code with strong attention to reliability, performance, and supportability.
  • Create and maintain automated unit, integration, functional, and regression tests.
  • Improve QA automation coverage for APIs, event-driven flows, database-backed logic, and vendor/provider integrations.
  • Validate business logic involving data transformations, reference data workflows, and vendor feed processing.
  • Participate in backlog grooming, estimation, sprint planning, retrospectives, and technical design discussions.
  • Review code, test plans, automation coverage, and design changes from peers.
  • Contribute to build, deployment, and release readiness across shared environments.
  • Identify risks, dependencies, and blockers early, and work across teams to resolve them.
  • Mentor junior engineers and help raise engineering standards across the team.
  • Contribute to documentation, test strategy, support runbooks, and long-term platform improvements.

Technical Environment
  • Java 17
  • Gradle
  • Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, Spring Integration, Spring Cloud Stream
  • Event-driven microservices
  • Azure Service Bus
  • Service/message contracts
  • SQL Server and Snowflake
  • JUnit 5, integration-test frameworks, functional automation
  • JaCoCo, SonarQube
  • Kubernetes, Helm, Skaffold, Argo CD
  • Jib/containerized deployment patterns
  • Observability, tracing, structured logging
  • Enterprise CI/CD and secure dependency management

What You Will Own
  • Delivery of new RTAPI and microservice capabilities from design through automated validation
  • Stability and supportability of critical data-processing workflows
  • High-quality automation for unit, integration, and regression coverage
  • Investigation and resolution of complex issues affecting production or client-facing workflows
  • Technical leadership within the Scrum team, including code quality, design quality, and execution discipline

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field; equivalent practical experience will also be considered.
  • Strong professional software engineering experience in Java development
  • Proven experience building and maintaining enterprise backend systems or microservices
  • Strong understanding of object-oriented design, data structures, concurrency, and distributed systems
  • Hands-on experience with Spring Boot and service-based application development
  • Strong SQL and database experience, including troubleshooting data and query-related issues
  • Experience building automated tests at multiple layers, including unit and integration testing
  • Experience debugging complex issues across code, configuration, data, and environment boundaries
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated success working in Agile/Scrum teams
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across development, QA, support, and platform teams

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with financial systems, capital markets, market data, or reference data platforms
  • Experience with Azure messaging or other cloud-based event platforms
  • Experience with contract-based integration, or message-driven architecture
  • Experience with Kubernetes-based deployment models
  • Experience with production support, observability, and incident investigation
  • Experience modernizing legacy platforms while also building new microservices
  • Experience mentoring engineers and leading technical work within a sprint-based team
