What is a software developer?

A Software Developer is a professional who designs, builds, tests, and maintains computer programs or applications. They use programming languages to create software solutions that meet user needs, whether for desktop, mobile, or web platforms. Software Developers work closely with other team members such as designers, analysts, and testers to ensure the final product is functional, reliable, and user-friendly. Their responsibilities can range from writing code and fixing bugs to collaborating on system architecture and deploying updates.

What do software developers do?

Software developers design and create computer software programs and systems for their employer or client. Their job is to apply the principles of engineering, analytics, and computer science toward the development and testing of all kinds of software and applications. On a day-to-day basis, a software developer helps create and test software from start to finish. They discuss and analyze user requests and requirements, then research and brainstorm practical solutions to meet those needs, and determine the best course of action to create the application. As a software developer, you may develop an entirely new program or improve an existing one; you are responsible for a program’s overall framework and must design precise workflow charts that explain to programmers what code is needed for different aspects of the program.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Java, Python, or JavaScript, as well as a solid understanding of computer science fundamentals and a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with development tools such as Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and frameworks like React or .NET is typically required, along with knowledge of agile methodologies or certifications. Problem-solving ability, attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication are essential soft skills that help you excel in collaborative and fast-paced environments. These skills ensure you can build reliable, maintainable software and adapt to evolving project requirements and technologies.

What are some common challenges software developers face when working on team-based projects?

Software developers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with team members across different time zones, managing code integration from multiple contributors, and maintaining clear communication about project requirements. Effective use of version control systems like Git and regular participation in code reviews can help mitigate these issues. Additionally, adapting to evolving project goals and balancing technical debt with feature development are common hurdles that require strong collaboration and problem-solving skills.

Job description

About Osmind

Osmind is a technology, services, and data company focused exclusively on psychiatry. We serve 800+ independent psychiatry practices across 49 states with a purpose-built EHR, software solutions, and managed services. We're a San Francisco–based Series B Public Benefit Corporation backed by DFJ Growth, Future Ventures, General Catalyst, and Y Combinator.

We're growing rapidly and are launching a brand new platform. This is a rare opportunity to shape its technical foundation while making a significant impact on patients, clinicians, and researchers.

The Opportunity

We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer to be a core member of our Product Engineering team—writing code every day, contributing to architectural discussions, and partnering with Product and Clinical teams to build software that directly improves patient outcomes.

What You'll Do
  • Contribute to and influence architecture decisions across our stack, helping establish patterns the team builds on
  • Own complex product challenges end-to-end—from technical design through shipping to end users
  • Support and grow other engineers through code reviews, design feedback, and pairing
  • Partner with Product, Design, and Clinical teams to translate clinical workflows into scalable solutions
  • Identify and help drive improvements to technical debt, reliability, and developer experience
  • Actively use AI tools in your daily workflow and contribute to team-wide best practices
  • Our tech stack: TypeScript, Node.js, React, Postgres, AWS, ECS
Requirements
  • 5+ years of full-stack engineering experience shipping complex features in production systems
  • Track record of owning and delivering technical initiatives end-to-end
  • Experience contributing to 0-1 builds
  • Proficient with AI coding tools as part of daily development
  • Clear communicator who can collaborate effectively across engineering and product stakeholders
  • Passion for improving mental healthcare
Nice to Haves
  • HIPAA-regulated healthcare or fintech experience
  • AI/ML integration in production
Depending on experience. The reasonably estimated national salary range for this position is between $150,150-$200,000 per year, plus an equity package for eligible employees. Actual compensation will be commensurate with the candidate’s experience and local cost of labor. In addition, Osmind offers a wide range of comprehensive and inclusive employee benefits, including healthcare, dental, vision, generous family leave, FSA/DCFSA, mental health benefits, a 401(k) plan, and flexible paid time off.
Some candidates may see the list above and feel discouraged because they don't match all the items. Please apply anyway: there's a good chance you also have important skills we've missed! We are committed to diversity and building an equitable and inclusive environment for people of all backgrounds and experiences, and we're taking steps to meet that commitment. We especially encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply, including women, underrepresented people of color, LGBTQ+ people, veterans, and people with disabilities.

We may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support parts of the hiring process, such as reviewing applications, analyzing resumes, or assessing responses and identifying potential inconsistencies or verification signals in application materials based on available information. These tools assist our recruitment team but do not replace human judgment. Final hiring decisions are ultimately made by humans. If you would like more information about how your data is processed, please contact us.
