What is a software developer?

A Software Developer is a professional who designs, builds, tests, and maintains computer programs or applications. They use programming languages to create software solutions that meet user needs, whether for desktop, mobile, or web platforms. Software Developers work closely with other team members such as designers, analysts, and testers to ensure the final product is functional, reliable, and user-friendly. Their responsibilities can range from writing code and fixing bugs to collaborating on system architecture and deploying updates.

What do software developers do?

Software developers design and create computer software programs and systems for their employer or client. Their job is to apply the principles of engineering, analytics, and computer science toward the development and testing of all kinds of software and applications. On a day-to-day basis, a software developer helps create and test software from start to finish. They discuss and analyze user requests and requirements, then research and brainstorm practical solutions to meet those needs, and determine the best course of action to create the application. As a software developer, you may develop an entirely new program or improve an existing one; you are responsible for a program’s overall framework and must design precise workflow charts that explain to programmers what code is needed for different aspects of the program.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Java, Python, or JavaScript, as well as a solid understanding of computer science fundamentals and a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with development tools such as Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and frameworks like React or .NET is typically required, along with knowledge of agile methodologies or certifications. Problem-solving ability, attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication are essential soft skills that help you excel in collaborative and fast-paced environments. These skills ensure you can build reliable, maintainable software and adapt to evolving project requirements and technologies.

What are some common challenges software developers face when working on team-based projects?

Software developers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with team members across different time zones, managing code integration from multiple contributors, and maintaining clear communication about project requirements. Effective use of version control systems like Git and regular participation in code reviews can help mitigate these issues. Additionally, adapting to evolving project goals and balancing technical debt with feature development are common hurdles that require strong collaboration and problem-solving skills.

Why You'll Love This Opportunity
This isn't simply another Lead Developer position.
You'll become the technical leader for a modern enterprise application that was built within the last five years and supports thousands of commercial customers. Rather than inheriting outdated legacy software, you'll help shape the future of a stable, business-critical platform while influencing cloud modernization initiatives and engineering best practices.
If you're passionate about architecture, mentoring developers, solving complex technical problems, and helping an entire engineering team become more productive, this role offers the opportunity to make a lasting impact.
Job Description
Our client, an established and financially strong enterprise organization, is looking for an experienced Lead Full Stack Developer to provide technical leadership for one of its most important customer-facing applications.
This individual will partner closely with Product Owners, Enterprise Architecture, and Agile development teams to deliver scalable, secure, high-quality software while mentoring junior engineers and driving technical excellence.
Success in this role isn't measured solely by the amount of code you write.
Instead, you'll be expected to improve the productivity, technical maturity, and overall effectiveness of the entire development team through thoughtful leadership, architecture, mentoring, and sound engineering decisions.
Responsibilities
  • Lead the technical direction of a modern enterprise application
  • Design scalable client-side and server-side architecture
  • Mentor and coach junior software engineers
  • Establish development standards, best practices, and coding guidelines
  • Break down complex initiatives into projects, epics, and user stories
  • Partner with Enterprise Architecture to implement scalable, secure solutions
  • Design and develop REST APIs and enterprise integrations
  • Lead application modernization initiatives
  • Improve software quality, resiliency, security, and performance
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies and technical planning sessions
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and AI-assisted engineering tools to improve developer productivity
  • Collaborate across multiple development teams on enterprise initiatives
Qualifications & Requirements
Required
  • 5+ years of full-stack software development experience
  • Demonstrated experience serving as a Technical Lead or Lead Developer
  • Strong hands-on experience with:
    • Kotlin
    • Spring Boot
    • React
  • Experience designing RESTful APIs
  • Experience building enterprise applications
  • Experience with AWS, Kubernetes, or containerized cloud environments
  • Strong understanding of software architecture and design patterns
  • Experience mentoring developers and leading technical decision making
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
Preferred
  • Financial Services, Insurance, Healthcare, or other regulated industry experience
  • AWS Native development experience
  • AI-assisted software development experience
  • Experience modernizing enterprise applications
What Will Make You Successful
We're looking for someone who has already demonstrated success leading development teams—not simply someone looking for their first Lead opportunity.
The ideal candidate enjoys:
  • Mentoring developers
  • Removing technical roadblocks
  • Making architectural decisions
  • Improving engineering practices
  • Leading technical discussions
  • Building scalable software
  • Working across multiple Agile teams
  • Continuously learning modern technologies
If you enjoy making the entire team better—not just writing great code yourself—you'll thrive in this role.
Work Authorization
Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Sponsorship is not available for this position now or in the future. C2C and third-party candidates cannot be considered.
Benefits & Perks
  • Competitive salary of $140,000 - $150,000
  • Annual performance bonus
  • Medical, Dental & Vision Insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid Time Off & Holidays
  • Professional development opportunities
  • Hybrid work environment
  • Long-term career advancement
  • Collaborative engineering culture focused on innovation
Your New Organization
You'll join a financially strong, highly respected organization that continues investing in modern software engineering and cloud technologies. You'll work on a stable platform with meaningful business impact while helping drive future modernization initiatives. The engineering culture values collaboration, continuous learning, technical leadership, and long-term employee growth.
