Job Title: Software/Product Developer

Job Description

This role focuses on designing, developing, and maintaining real-time satellite command and control software, while also providing project engineering support. You will contribute to a long-lived, stable suite of satellite programs, working on both legacy systems that have been in operation for more than two decades and newer satellite platforms, in a dynamic environment based in the Lanham, Maryland area.

Responsibilities

  • Develop robust real-time software that supports a 24/7 operational satellite command and control system.
  • Perform ongoing maintenance, bug fixes, and enhancements on existing software products to ensure reliability and performance.
  • Analyze customer requirements to identify unmet needs and translate them into technical specifications and product improvements.
  • Design and develop commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) product enhancements to meet evolving customer and operational requirements.
  • Interface directly with internal and external users of the satellite command and control product, investigate reported issues, and provide effective solutions.
  • Support internal engineering teams and external customers in the use, troubleshooting, and optimization of satellite command and control systems.
  • Collaborate with project engineering and development teams to ensure software solutions align with overall product and system architecture.
  • Apply appropriate software development lifecycle models to plan, implement, test, and deliver high-quality software releases.
  • Contribute to development management and release management activities to ensure smooth deployment and version control of software products.

Essential Skills

  • 2–7 years of professional software development experience.
  • Proficiency in coding with C++ and Java for application and systems development.
  • Experience building multi-threaded or real-time applications that support continuous operations.
  • Hands-on experience developing software in a Linux environment.
  • Knowledge of at least one software development lifecycle model and the ability to apply it in practice.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working with SQL databases for data storage, retrieval, and integration with software applications.
  • Experience coding Windows Services to support processes and system-level functionality.
  • Experience using configuration management systems such as Git or Subversion for source control and collaboration.
  • Experience with COBRA or REST-based inter-process communication for distributed or service-oriented architectures.
  • Experience in development management or release management for software products, including planning and executing releases.
  • Experience with satellite command and control systems is a major plus, but not required.

Work Environment

This position follows a hybrid work arrangement, with approximately two days per week onsite in the Lanham, Maryland area, with plans to relocate the office to College Park. You will work with long-standing, stable satellite programs that have been operating for more than 20 years, as well as newer satellite systems, in a professional engineering and software development environment that relies on Linux-based development, multi-threaded and real-time applications, and modern configuration management tools such as Git or Subversion.
