What is a software developer contract?

A Software Developer Contract job is a temporary or project-based position where a developer is hired for a specific duration, typically through a contract agreement. Contractors may work independently, for an agency, or directly with a company to develop, test, and maintain software applications. These roles often offer flexibility but may not include benefits like health insurance or paid time off. Contract developers are usually paid hourly or per project and may work remotely or on-site depending on the employer's needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software developer contract?

A successful Software Developer Contract requires strong programming abilities, solid knowledge of software development methodologies, and relevant project or domain expertise, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with languages like Java, Python, or JavaScript, as well as tools such as Git, Agile frameworks, and certification in areas like AWS or Scrum, is highly valued. Excellent problem-solving skills, adaptability, effective communication, and an ability to quickly integrate into new teams are crucial soft skills. These competencies enable contract developers to deliver high-quality solutions while efficiently navigating diverse projects and rapidly changing work environments.

What are the typical work arrangements and expectations for contract software developers?

Contract Software Developers are usually hired for specific projects or defined timeframes, which can range from several weeks to multiple months, often working remotely or on-site depending on client needs. They are expected to quickly understand project requirements, deliver code efficiently, and collaborate with both in-house teams and other contractors, maintaining flexibility to adapt to different workflows and tools. Because contract roles may not include the same onboarding experience as permanent positions, self-motivation and strong independent work habits are important. This work arrangement provides valuable exposure to various industries and technologies, often expanding a developer’s professional network and enhancing career versatility.

Are software developers still in high demand?

Yes, software developers remain in high demand due to ongoing digital transformation across industries, the need for new applications, and the growth of cloud computing and cybersecurity. Strong programming skills in languages like Java, Python, or JavaScript, along with experience in agile environments, enhance job prospects for contract software developers.

How much do contract software developers make?

Contract software developers typically earn between $50 and $150 per hour, depending on experience, location, and project complexity. Rates can vary based on skills such as proficiency in specific programming languages, frameworks, and the duration of the contract.

Feeling energized to make a meaningful impact on the world? Then keep reading - you've come to the right place.
Role Description
The Factory Software team is seeking a Factory Software Engineer to bridge the gap between physical manufacturing hardware and enterprise-level orchestration. In this role, you will be responsible for the development and ownership of the mission-critical software services and data architectures that power our entire factory ecosystem. You will function as a key partner to our Manufacturing, Automation, and Quality teams, building high-performance systems that enable real-time process control, material flow orchestration, and end-to-end product genealogy. You will collaborate closely with Data Engineering and Platform teams to leverage our on-prem and cloud infrastructure, building scalable, custom solutions that serve as the digital backbone for our first-of-a-kind manufacturing lines.
What you'll do:
  • Architect and Scale the Factory Stack: Design, develop, and deliver the end-to-end software services and data architectures-built in Go and Postgres-that orchestrate novel battery electrodes and assembly lines.
  • Build the Digital Backbone: Drive the integration of real-time machine data with high-level business logic, ensuring seamless material flow, process control, and comprehensive product genealogy across the entire factory.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with experienced software, data, controls, process, and quality engineers to bridge the gap between hardware and software, developing a high-quality, high-performance digital factory ecosystem.
  • Operational Excellence: Take ownership of the systems you build by participating in rotating on-call shifts and providing on-the-floor support, ensuring rapid problem-solving and continuous 24/7 production.
  • Continuous Innovation: Leverage on-prem and cloud infrastructure to build scalable solutions that replace legacy silos with a unified, software-driven manufacturing environment.

What you'll bring:
  • 5+ years of industry experience building and scaling production-grade software services
  • Professional expertise writing high-performance, reusable code in Go within a collaborative environment
  • Deep experience in relational database design, schema management, and query optimization using Postgres
  • Demonstrated ability to architect and own end-to-end software systems that orchestrate complex, real-world processes
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to relay technical architecture decisions to non-technical stakeholders
  • Proven track record of working independently with excellent time management and the ability to prioritize critical path tasks in a high-stakes environment
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
  • Significant experience in a manufacturing, warehouse, or logistics environment working with software that interacts with physical hardware is highly desirable
  • Experience collaborating with a diverse range of stakeholders, including Automation, Process, and Operations teams, to define system requirements
  • Experience with distributed systems, message brokers, or containerization (Docker/Kubernetes) is a plus
  • A passion for technical mentorship and a desire to drive engineering excellence in a fast-paced, mission-driven startup environment

Where you'll work:
This role is based at Form Factory 1 in Weirton, WV-an easy commute from the city of Pittsburgh, PA. This 550,000-square-foot facility is our hub for high-volume battery production and a leader in the new era of American energy manufacturing. Relocation assistance is available.
#LI-Onsite
Humanity is a cornerstone of Form Energy's culture, and we make sure our compensation and benefits reflect that. Form Energy offers competitive salaries, stock options, and a holistic benefits package to ensure all employees have what they need to thrive while working here.
When it comes to you and your family's health, we cover 100% of medical, dental, and vision premiums for full-time employees - and 80% of healthcare premiums for dependents. This starts from day one. We also offer at least 12 weeks of paid leave for new parents (up to 20 weeks for birthing parents), and generous vacation policies to give employees time to recharge when needed.
To build America's energy future, we need everyone at the table. We are proud to be an equal opportunity employer, and encourage candidates from all backgrounds to apply to our open jobs.
