What is a software developer contract?

A Software Developer Contract job is a temporary or project-based position where a developer is hired for a specific duration, typically through a contract agreement. Contractors may work independently, for an agency, or directly with a company to develop, test, and maintain software applications. These roles often offer flexibility but may not include benefits like health insurance or paid time off. Contract developers are usually paid hourly or per project and may work remotely or on-site depending on the employer's needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software developer contract?

A successful Software Developer Contract requires strong programming abilities, solid knowledge of software development methodologies, and relevant project or domain expertise, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with languages like Java, Python, or JavaScript, as well as tools such as Git, Agile frameworks, and certification in areas like AWS or Scrum, is highly valued. Excellent problem-solving skills, adaptability, effective communication, and an ability to quickly integrate into new teams are crucial soft skills. These competencies enable contract developers to deliver high-quality solutions while efficiently navigating diverse projects and rapidly changing work environments.

What are the typical work arrangements and expectations for contract software developers?

Contract Software Developers are usually hired for specific projects or defined timeframes, which can range from several weeks to multiple months, often working remotely or on-site depending on client needs. They are expected to quickly understand project requirements, deliver code efficiently, and collaborate with both in-house teams and other contractors, maintaining flexibility to adapt to different workflows and tools. Because contract roles may not include the same onboarding experience as permanent positions, self-motivation and strong independent work habits are important. This work arrangement provides valuable exposure to various industries and technologies, often expanding a developer’s professional network and enhancing career versatility.

Are software developers still in high demand?

Yes, software developers remain in high demand due to ongoing digital transformation across industries, the need for new applications, and the growth of cloud computing and cybersecurity. Strong programming skills in languages like Java, Python, or JavaScript, along with experience in agile environments, enhance job prospects for contract software developers.

How much do contract software developers make?

Contract software developers typically earn between $50 and $150 per hour, depending on experience, location, and project complexity. Rates can vary based on skills such as proficiency in specific programming languages, frameworks, and the duration of the contract.

Job Description:
Job Description
Location: 2 positions total: 2 onshore Dallas or Jersey City.
Overview: We are seeking an experienced Apigee API Platform Development Engineer to lead the design, security, and management of our APIs and API gateway platform. In this role, you will leverage deep expertise in Apigee API traffic management, REST API security patterns (Basic Auth, OAuth 2.0, mTLS), and CDN integration (Akamai) to ensure our APIs are scalable, secure, and high-performing. You will also play a key role in Apigee architecture oversight and spearhead our transition from Apigee Edge to Apigee Hybrid deployment. The ideal candidate is a Senior API Platform Engineer with 8+ years of experience (including substantial Apigee Edge/Hybrid experience) in building enterprise-grade API management solutions, designing robust API proxies and flows, and implementing advanced security and traffic-control policies.
  • Experience: 8+ years of software engineering experience with at least 5 years focused on API management and Google Apigee platform (Apigee Edge and/or Apigee Hybrid). Proven track record of designing, developing, and optimizing large-scale API solutions using Apigee in enterprise environments.
  • Apigee Expertise: Hands-on mastery of Apigee Edge and Apigee Hybrid. Deep understanding of Apigee's core architecture and components - e.g. Edge Management Server, Router, Message Processor, Analytics services, Developer Portal, Cassandra data store, ZooKeeper coordination, etc. Ability to configure and troubleshoot the full Apigee stack, from API proxy design, shared flow development and tracing, to underlying platform services.
  • API Security & Networking: Strong knowledge of REST API security standards and protocols. Must be well-versed in OAuth 2.0 (client credentials, authorization code flows), JSON Web Tokens (JWT), API key management, TLS/mTLS encryption, and implementing authentication/authorization policies in Apigee.

͏
  • Akamai & Edge Services: Demonstrated experience working with Akamai CDN or similar edge delivery networks in conjunction with an API gateway. Ability to design and debug request flows that involve an external CDN layer (handling domain mappings, caching rules, request/response transformations) passing traffic to Apigee. Understanding of how to utilize edge networks for improving API performance and security (e.g., offloading traffic, enabling geo-distribution, implementing mTLS between Akamai and Apigee).
  • Cloud & DevOps Skills: Familiarity with Kubernetes and cloud infrastructure (GCP, AWS, or Azure) is required, especially for working with Apigee Hybrid deployments. Experience with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes) and understanding how Apigee Hybrid's management plane and runtime plane operate in a K8s environment. Strong DevOps/Automation skills: proficiency in CI/CD pipelines, scripting, and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform/Helm) to automate Apigee deployments and configuration.
  • API & Web Services Development: Solid grasp of RESTful API design principles and best practices in building scalable web services. Proficiency in at least one programming or scripting language (JavaScript, Java, Python, etc.) for writing custom Apigee policies (JavaScript/Node.js, Java callouts) or automating tasks. Familiarity with microservices architecture and frameworks (e.g., Java Spring Boot or Node.js for backend services) is a plus, as Apigee often integrates with microservice backends.
  • Problem-Solving & Communication: Excellent troubleshooting skills to diagnose complex API issues across the entire request lifecycle - from client to Apigee to backend. Able to analyze API logs, debug policies, and use Apigee's tracing/analytics tools to quickly identify issues in traffic flow or performance. Strong communication skills are essential - must be able to work cross-functionally with developers, operations, security, and business stakeholders to translate requirements into robust API solutions. Proven ability to document designs, processes, diagrams, and guidelines for both technical and non-technical audiences (e.g., API documentation, security guidelines).
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field is required. A Master's degree in a relevant field is a plus.

Mandatory Skills: Apigee EnterpriseAPI Management Platform.
Experience: 5-8 Years.
The expected compensation for this role ranges from $60,000 to $135,000 .
Final compensation will depend on various factors, including your geographical location, minimum wage obligations, skills, and relevant experience. Based on the position, the role is also eligible for Wipro's standard benefits including a full range of medical and dental benefits options, disability insurance, paid time off (inclusive of sick leave), other paid and unpaid leave options.
Applicants are advised that employment in some roles may be conditioned on successful completion of a post-offer drug screening, subject to applicable state law.
