What is a software dev manager?

Software Dev Managers are professionals who lead and oversee software development teams within an organization. They are responsible for managing projects, guiding developers, setting technical direction, and ensuring that software products are delivered on time and meet quality standards. In addition to technical expertise, they also handle team management tasks such as hiring, mentoring, and performance reviews. Their role is crucial in bridging the gap between business goals and technical implementation.

How does a software dev manager balance technical leadership with people management responsibilities?

A Software Dev Manager is often responsible for both guiding the technical direction of projects and supporting the professional growth of their team members. This balance requires clear communication, regular one-on-one meetings, and staying up-to-date with technical trends while also handling performance reviews, hiring, and team development. Effective managers delegate technical tasks appropriately, foster a collaborative team culture, and act as a bridge between developers and other departments. This dual focus can be challenging but is essential for driving both project success and employee satisfaction.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software dev manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Development Manager, you need a strong background in software engineering, leadership experience, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira), version control systems (such as Git), and agile methodologies is essential, and certifications like PMP or Scrum Master can be advantageous. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and team-building abilities help you effectively lead diverse teams and manage stakeholder expectations. These skills and qualifications are crucial for delivering high-quality software on schedule, fostering team growth, and achieving organizational goals.

Job description

Why Sony Interactive Entertainment?

Sony Interactive Entertainment isnโ€™t just the Best Place to Play โ€” itโ€™s also the Best Place to Work. Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) is the company behind the PlayStation brand. As a subsidiary of Sony Group Corporation, weโ€™re part of a proud legacy of innovation and excellence. SIE is a dynamic technology company, delivering cuttingโ€‘edge hardware and network services to more than 100โ€ฏmillion people and an entertainment leader, home to some of the most beloved and recognizable intellectual properties (IP) in the world. Our role at SIE is to create and nurture the experiences under the PlayStation brand, a name synonymous with entertainment excellence and creativity.

Manager, Software Engineering

Madison, WI

We are looking for a Software Engineering Manager to lead and develop a team of engineers building the pricing and offers capabilities that power PlayStation commerce. Our teams work across the stack, from services and APIs that manage and deliver prices and offers, to partner and operator tooling, to customerโ€‘facing experiences across PlayStation platforms.

Youโ€™ll create an environment where engineers can grow, take ownership, and deliver their best work, while maintaining a high bar for technical excellence and execution. This role requires a balance of strong people leadership and technical depth, with the ability to coach and empower engineers, navigate complex problems, and make sound decisions when priorities compete.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of engineers, creating clear expectations, meaningful growth opportunities, and strong ownership across the team.
  • Drive engineering delivery against strategic business outcomes, breaking complex initiatives into incremental milestones that deliver value to production.
  • Maintain a high bar for engineering quality, operational excellence, and team performance.
  • Guide technical decisionโ€‘making by participating in architecture, design, and engineering tradeโ€‘offs while empowering engineers to own solutions.
  • Collaborate with Product, Design, Program Management, and Engineering teams across multiple time zones to align priorities, roadmaps, and dependencies.
  • Anticipate and remove technical and organizational roadblocks, risks, and dependencies that could prevent the team from delivering effectively.
  • Assess and communicate team capacity and resourcing needs, while continuously improving how the team operates and delivers.
Qualifications:
  • BS or Masterโ€™s in Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent experience
  • 6+ years of software development experience, including experience managing or leading software engineers
  • Demonstrated ability to manage, mentor, and empower engineers
  • Strong technical foundation with the ability to guide architecture, design, and engineering discussions
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to navigate ambiguity and balance priorities across multiple initiatives
  • Experience delivering complex software across multiple teams or systems; experience in commerce or pricing is not required.
  • Experience with Agile development practices and continuous improvement
Bonus
  • Experience with commerce, pricing, promotions, or other transactional systems
  • Experience with backend services/APIs, internal or partnerโ€‘facing tooling, or consumerโ€‘facing applications
  • Experience working in a globally distributed or matrixed organization
