Software Contract information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Software Contract Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Contract Manager, you need expertise in contract law, software licensing, negotiation, and compliance, usually grounded in a legal or business degree. Familiarity with contract management systems (CMS), e-signature tools, and legal research databases is typically required. Strong attention to detail, communication, and problem-solving skills help build effective relationships and mitigate risk. These competencies ensure contracts are structured to protect company interests, minimize legal exposure, and maximize value from software agreements.

What are typical challenges faced by professionals working in software contract roles, and how can they effectively manage these challenges?

Professionals in software contract roles often face challenges such as managing multiple client expectations, ensuring clear communication of project requirements, and adapting quickly to new codebases or technologies. Time management is crucial, as contract work may involve juggling several projects with overlapping deadlines. Building strong client relationships and setting clear deliverables from the outset can help mitigate misunderstandings and scope creep. Staying organized and maintaining up-to-date documentation are also key practices for success in this dynamic and fast-paced work environment.

What are software contracts?

Software contracts are legally binding agreements that define the terms and conditions under which software is developed, licensed, or used. These contracts typically outline the rights and responsibilities of both parties, including payment terms, deliverables, intellectual property ownership, support, maintenance, and confidentiality clauses. They help protect both software providers and clients by ensuring clarity and minimizing disputes. Common types include software development agreements, licensing agreements, and maintenance contracts.

Job description

Join our dynamic team to innovate and refine technology operations, impacting the core of our business services.
As a Technology Support Lead in Corporate Technology, Infrastructure Platforms team, you will play a leadership role in ensuring the operational stability, availability, and performance of our production services. Critical thinking while overseeing day-to-day maintenance of the firm's systems will be key and set you up for success as you navigate tasks related to identifying, troubleshooting, and resolving issues to ensure a seamless user experience.
Enterprise Software Management (ESM), a function within Global Technology Infrastructure (GTI), is seeking a Software Asset Optimization Owner. ESM manages JPMorganChase's global software assets, including license compliance against contractual rights and obligations, request fulfillment, maintenance renewals, contract negotiations, chargeback, global software catalog management, license key administration, and related processes and data governance.
Within ESM, team members have responsibilities to identify and assign tasks across interdepartmental groups that ensure ongoing successful optimization of contract requirements/opportunities. The team is focused on being strategic and proactive in their approach and work to maximize the value and minimize the risk of the contracts we manage.
The scope of ESM's work includes financial forecasting and budget planning related to the software contracts we manage. Financial planning in this capacity requires the involvement of teams outside of our group including Sourcing, Finance, and the Product Owner.
Job Responsibilities
  • Manage software licensing, contracts, and inventory, including familiarity with licensing models/terms and contract structures from major vendors (e.g., Microsoft, IBM, Oracle, Broadcom, SAP, Adobe), and the ability to research and interpret less common terms across other publishers.
  • Create and deliver software compliance reporting, including trends and insights to support cost control, pre-audit readiness, and ongoing compliance.
  • Maintain accurate software and contract records across traditional repositories and modern license management systems; monitor changes and assess/communicate downstream impacts.
  • Perform periodic internal compliance audits to reconcile entitlements (licenses purchased/rights granted) against deployments and consumption across physical and virtual environments, SaaS platforms, and third-party cloud environments.
  • Partner with software product owners to determine strategy and optimize usage ahead of maintenance renewals and contract negotiations to avoid unnecessary costs.
  • Project manage the contract renewal activity across the different teams that are involved in decision making on software asset management in a forward-thinking manner to allow for proactive actions. Identify work that should be completed, assign reasonable dates, and follow-up to ensure success.
  • Ensure high levels of data quality in the products and contracts assigned, while showing a data owner mindset.
  • Possess a financial acumen around forecasting and budgeting.
  • Identify and remediate license gaps when consumption exceeds contractual entitlements; coordinate with product owners, Vendor Management, Sourcing, and Legal as needed.
  • Collaborate with the Software Discovery team to ensure discovery tools accurately and comprehensively detect software usage for assigned publishers.
  • Own publisher-facing licensing items for assigned vendors and drive optimal outcomes for internal customers.

Required qualifications, skills and capabilities
  • 7+ years of experience managing software assets across on-prem, SaaS, and/or public cloud environments.
  • Strong understanding of software license metrics and software contracts (e.g., entitlements, use rights, restrictions, audit clauses) and how they apply within Software Asset Management (SAM).
  • Experience reading, interpreting, and operationalizing software license agreements and contract terms
  • Experience with SAM tools such as USU/Aspera, Flexera, SNOW, or SamPro.
  • Familiarity with software discovery tools (e.g., ADDM, SCCM, Altiris) and/or inventory/CMDB systems.
  • Experience with license harvesting and/or large-scale end-user surveys.
  • Self-starter with demonstrated initiative and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Collaborative working style with the ability to build productive relationships with internal customers and partners

Preferred Qualifications
  • Received Software Asset Management certifications from a recognized training provider.
  • Customer service mindset with a track record of delivering sustained high performance and customer satisfaction.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and interact effectively with varying levels of management.
  • Ability to manage multiple teams to facilitate the successful execution of a project's goals with optimal solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential information and communications appropriately.
  • Strong analytical skills in Excel; detail-oriented with the ability to synthesize complex data into clear, concise insights.
