Job description

We are the people who give possibilities purpose

BD is one of the largest global medical technology companies in the world. Advancing the world of health is our Purpose, and it's no small feat. It takes the imagination and passion of all of us-from design and engineering to the manufacturing and marketing of our billions of MedTech products per year-to look at the impossible and find transformative solutions that turn dreams into possibilities.

Job Description

Summary

As an Associate Principal Software Engineer, the chosen candidate will serve as the Platform Technology Architect for Software & Connectivity across the UCC product portfolio. In this role assignment, the individual guides the organization's multi-generation software and connectivity technology strategy across UCC product families, including Targeted Temperature Management, Endourology, and Urine Incontinence platforms.

The selected candidate will own the architectural direction and capability roadmap across embedded software, GUI/application software, operating system strategy, product security, wireless connectivity, device-cloud integration, diagnostics, service tools, and software test automation.

The individual in this position partners with engineering, quality, regulatory, operations, marketing, cybersecurity, human factors, and program teams to ensure software and connectivity improvements are prioritized, measured, reusable, and consistently deployed from product to product.

Core Responsibilities

  • Own the UCC software and connectivity capability roadmap across embedded software, GUI software, operating systems, product security, wireless connectivity, device-cloud data interfaces, diagnostics, service tools, and test automation.

  • Define "crawl/walk/run" maturity steps for each software and connectivity domain and align them to product release trains across UCC platforms.

  • Ensure the roadmap integrates inputs from VOC, complaints, service data, usability findings, software defect trends, cybersecurity risks, regulatory needs, manufacturing/service constraints, and latest technological advancements.

  • Lead periodic software and connectivity platform strategy reviews and publish the roadmap with clear deliverables, decision points, investment needs, and success metrics.

  • Establish software architecture principles, modularity strategy, interface expectations, cybersecurity guardrails, and reuse models so improvements can be leveraged across multiple products instead of recreated program-by-program.

  • Software & Connectivity technical authority for software- and connectivity-impacting changes, including participation in CCB, architecture reviews, and pre-PGR technical assessments.

  • Create and maintain reference architectures, design decision records, software platform standards, preferred technologies, and reusable design patterns.

  • Provide go/no-go guidance on major software architecture choices, GUI framework decisions, operating system strategy, wireless connectivity approaches, product security architecture, and device-cloud integration paths.

  • Establish expectations for real-time behavior, operating system selection, hardware abstraction, firmware update strategy, fault handling, cybersecurity controls, and software risk mitigations.

  • Define GUI architecture principles that support consistent user workflows, human factors expectations, clinical/service modes, and configuration management across product families.

  • Establish reusable UI patterns, component strategies, framework recommendations, and design guardrails to improve usability consistency and reduce program-by-program reinvention.

  • Guide wireless and wired connectivity architecture, including Bluetooth/BLE, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, gateway models, pairing/provisioning, offline/online behavior, telemetry models, and device-cloud interface expectations.

  • Partner with BD Incada and enterprise connectivity teams to align UCC products with scalable data, API, telemetry, identity, audit, and interoperability strategies where applicable.

  • Define product security architecture expectations, including threat modeling, secure boot/update strategy, authentication, encryption, key management, SBOM expectations, vulnerability management, and security design reviews.

  • Influence the software development lifecycle, architecture documentation, code quality expectations, static analysis, CI/CD approach, simulator strategy, software-in-the-loop/hardware-in-the-loop testing, and automated regression coverage.

  • Drive platform-level decisions that improve software maintainability, testability, release readiness, serviceability, and long-term sustaining efficiency.

  • Translate the software and connectivity roadmap for product design teams; ensure clear ownership by embedded software, application software, systems, electrical, cybersecurity, verification, and program teams.

  • Partner with PDLs, CTLs, Tech Leads, Marketing, Innovation, Quality, Regulatory, Human Factors, Operations, Service, and Supply Chain to bring the best technical solution to governance forums and product programs.

  • Support software risk posture, IEC 62304 strategy, cybersecurity documentation, verification approach, design control expectations, and regulatory submission readiness.

  • Promote reuse by ensuring teams adopt platform modules, interface standards, reference architectures, test tools, and common design patterns unless a program-specific exception is justified and documented.

  • Use field data, complaints, software defects, connectivity failure modes, service returns, usability feedback, cybersecurity findings, and manufacturing/service data to prioritize the next platform improvements.

Qualifications

  • BS/MS in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related technical discipline.

  • 10+ years of experience in embedded software, medical device software, regulated product development, or software-enabled electromechanical systems with platform reuse across releases.

  • Demonstrated success leading cross-functional software architecture strategy, not only subsystem design or program execution.

  • Strong background in systems thinking, software architecture, risk management, design controls, cybersecurity, and technology evaluation.

  • Ability to influence without direct authority across software, systems, electrical, quality, regulatory, marketing, operations, cybersecurity, service, and program teams.

Preferred

  • Experience with IEC 62304, FDA-regulated medical devices, product cybersecurity, software risk management, usability/human factors, and connected medical products.

  • Experience with embedded C/C++, RTOS or embedded Linux, GUI/application frameworks, mobile or companion applications, BLE/Wi-Fi/Ethernet connectivity, cloud integration, APIs, telemetry, and service/diagnostic tools.

  • Experience with software test automation, static analysis, CI/CD, simulators, hardware-in-the-loop/software-in-the-loop testing, and automated regression strategies.

  • Experience establishing platform governance, architecture review boards, reusable software modules, interface standards, and reference architectures across multiple product families.

  • Experience with hospital-connected systems, consumer-facing connected devices, capital equipment, and/or electromechanical medical platforms.
