Job description

Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the Assistant Program Manager, a Resident Assistant monitors activity of Residents in the facility; maintains security and safety of all Residents; and provides assistance to homeless individuals in support of resolution of homelessness. A Resident Assistant is also a key person in screening calls, receiving donations, engaging with volunteers, preparing meals, and making appropriate referrals to both residents and non-residents.

Essential Functions

  • Oversee facility ensuring that safety precautions are always observed; conducts facility security check regularly during assigned shifts
  • Reinforce policies/expectations for clients living in facility.
  • Provide written and verbal feedback to appropriate staff regarding anything which may positively or negatively impact on a resident resolution of homelessness or wellbeing.
  • Remain available to assist Residents with questions and requests.
  • Oversee Residents in accomplishing house duties, provide necessary supplies and verify that duties have been completed.
  • Provide Residents with support or essential items as needed and document assistance.
  • Maintain cleanliness of facility during shift and complete preparation of vacant rooms for incoming residents.
  • Ensure all facility supplies are properly stored.
  • Perform standard screenings for substance use or harmful behaviors and make necessary reports regarding welfare or safety as per policy.
  • Conduct proper transfer of information to Case Manager in a timely manner.
  • Provide transportation to residents when necessary.
  • Maintain confidentiality and social service code of ethics.
  • Maintain safe and sacred boundaries with program participants and staff members.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned related to your scope of work to include responsibilities at various locations within San Bernardino area administration.
  • Must be able to drive to pick up donated goods from various locations.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to speak, sit, walk, stand, bend, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent basis; to grasp, reach, handle, finger, push or pull objects
  • Ability to lift up to 20 lbs., or more with assistance.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle in daylight, darkness, or in inclement weather conditions.

Minimum Qualifications     

  • Completion of a High School Level Education or GED
  • Experience working with individuals who are in recovery, specifically those that have completed The Salvation Army’s Adult Rehabilitation program.
  • A minimum of one year working in recovery services/social services/human services.
  • Experience working with people at varying stages of recovery from substance abuse and different levels of metal health.
  • Experience deescalating conflict.
  • Experience operating general office equipment to include computers.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office programs preferred.
  • Must be able to pass a complete and satisfactory background check.
  • Ability to drive and maintain a valid Class C California Driver’s License, pass a TSA Driving Test and maintain a clean MVR.
  • Current CPR Certificate and First Aide Certificate preferred.

  • Able to handle crisis/emergency situations.
  • Able to communicate effectively with residents and be appropriately assertive.
  • Computer literate with a working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Ability to email, fax, operate copy/print/scan machine.
  • Ability to work harmoniously and professionally with Officers, supervisors, coworkers, residents, and the public.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • High ethics and integrity as per Social Service Code of ethics.
  • Willing and able to maintain confidential information in accordance with Salvation Army and industry standards.
  • Able to complete Decision Driving, PTM & Sexual harassment Trainings within 30 days of hire.
