What does a social engineer do?

A social engineer manipulates people to gain confidential information or access to systems by using psychological tactics such as deception, persuasion, or impersonation. This role often involves understanding human behavior, communication skills, and sometimes cybersecurity awareness to identify and exploit vulnerabilities.

Can I make $200 a year in cyber security?

Social engineering is a skill used in cybersecurity to manipulate individuals and gain access to information. While some entry-level roles or freelance activities may generate small amounts of income, making $200 a year is generally achievable with basic skills or small projects, but higher earnings typically require more experience, certifications, and advanced roles. Most cybersecurity jobs offer salaries significantly above that amount, especially with specialized knowledge and ongoing training.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Social Engineering position, and why are they important?

To succeed in a Social Engineering role, you need a deep understanding of human psychology, information security principles, and risk assessment, often supported by a degree in cybersecurity or related certifications such as CEH or Security+. Familiarity with social engineering toolkits, phishing simulation platforms, and incident response systems is often required. Excellent communication, observation, and persuasive skills help build trust and effectively identify vulnerabilities. These skills are crucial for ethically testing and strengthening an organization’s defenses against human-based security threats.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior cybersecurity engineers, especially those specializing in penetration testing or working in high-demand industries, can earn $500,000 or more annually. Achieving this level typically requires extensive experience, advanced certifications, and often roles in management or consulting with specialized skills in security tools and protocols.

What is a Social Engineering job?

A Social Engineering job typically involves manipulating or influencing people to disclose confidential information, often for security testing or ethical hacking purposes. Professionals in this role study human psychology, exploit security weaknesses, and test an organization's vulnerability to phishing, pretexting, and other deceptive tactics. Ethical social engineers work to improve cybersecurity by identifying and strengthening weak points in human-based security protocols.

What are some common challenges faced by Social Engineering professionals in their daily work?

Social Engineering professionals often navigate the challenge of balancing ethical testing practices with organizational trust, ensuring that their methods expose vulnerabilities without causing undue alarm. They must stay updated on evolving tactics and countermeasures, as threat actors continually develop new strategies for bypassing security. Collaboration with IT, HR, and management teams is essential for clear communication and effective training. This dynamic environment requires adaptability, discretion, and a commitment to ethical standards as well as ongoing professional development.

What jobs use social engineering?

Jobs that involve social engineering typically include roles in cybersecurity, such as security analysts and penetration testers, who use social engineering techniques to identify vulnerabilities. These professionals often require strong communication skills, knowledge of security protocols, and ethical hacking certifications to simulate attacks and improve organizational defenses.

Job description

At Bishop Fox, security isn't just a job-it's our passion. As leaders in continuous offensive security and penetration testing, we deliver world-class customer experiences. Trusted by over a quarter of the Fortune 100, half of the Fortune 10, and top global media companies, we help safeguard digital landscapes. Our Cosmos platform, honored as Best Emerging Technology by SC Media, exemplifies our commitment to innovation.

Joining Bishop Fox means collaborating with a curious and dedicated team. You'll tackle complex challenges for some of the world's most recognized organizations, securing their networks against real-world threats. With nearly 20 years of industry contributions-including 16 open-source tools and 50 security advisories published in the past five years-we're committed to making the digital world safer.

We're seeking remote, US or Mexico-based hacking professionals focused on red teaming to join our team - and help us build a more secure world.

Who You Are and What You'll Do

You are a born red teamer; you see problems and solutions in everything. You instinctively know your way around source code. You've plundered apps and pillaged networks (legally, of course). You have a passion for hacking that goes beyond a career - it's a way of life for you. At this point, you may have accumulated a few disclosures, written blog posts, and given some industry talks.

With Bishop Fox you'll be running red teaming engagements, starting with research and including profiling organizations, defining attack objectives and crafting attack tree graphs and other key planning efforts. You will then perform operations based on planning to achieve the attack objectives through a variety of potential attack paths, including network, web applications, physical, social engineering, and others. You will help our customers understand their attack surface by communicating, ability to respond to incidents, report on steps taken, and issues discovered. Additionally, you'll provide thoughtful, tailored, and actionable recommendations.

As a consultant, you'll solve challenging technical problems and build creative solutions in a client-facing role. As a trusted advisor, you'll provide your expert opinion to help our clients navigate difficult business decisions including how to prioritize critical findings. And as a senior penetration tester, you'll lead small teams on one-of-a-kind engagements, mentor co-workers, and contribute significantly to the advancement of our consulting practice

Requirements

  • 2-4 years of offensive security experience supporting a variety of adversary emulation engagements (red teaming and purple teaming) with clients from a variety of industries.
  • Working knowledge of all common operating systems such as Windows, MacOS, Linux, ChromeOS
  • Expertise in Windows Active Directory exploitation and lateral movement
  • Working knowledge of "cloud" platforms (AWS/Azure/GCP and O365/Google Workspace) and container technologies (Kubernetes/Docker)
  • Hands-on experience with c2 frameworks like Sliver, Nighthawk, Mythic, and others
  • Experience with custom tool and payload development, as well as reverse engineering, and evasion techniques
  • Experience researching and developing EDR evasion techniques.
  • Proficiency in multiple programming languages (preferably Python, Golang, JavaScript/TypeScript, C#, C/C++, PowerShell, and/or Bash)
  • Network and web-related protocol knowledge (e.g., TCP/IP, HTTP, HTTPS, etc.)
  • Demonstrated experience with social engineering, conducting reconnaissance, development, and delivery of phishing/vishing pretexts as well as an understanding of email security technologies and other related countermeasures
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Nice to have:

  • Expertise in exploit development and/or assembly (x86/arm)
  • Threat modeling, threat intelligence, or incident response experience
  • Experience with DevOps and CI/CD technologies
  • Experience conducting physical penetration testing engagements, including entry skills, RFID hacking, and alarm bypasses
  • OSCP/E, GWAPT, GPEN, or GXPN certifications can be helpful, but are not a necessity
