What is a social copywriter?

Social copywriters are professionals who create engaging written content specifically for social media platforms. Their work includes crafting posts, captions, headlines, and advertisements tailored to the voice of a brand and optimized for each social channel. Social copywriters aim to capture attention, encourage interaction, and drive actions such as likes, shares, or website visits. They need a strong understanding of social media trends, audience preferences, and effective marketing strategies.

How does a social copywriter typically collaborate with designers and marketers in a campaign?

As a Social Copywriter, you’ll work closely with designers to ensure that copy and visuals align seamlessly across social media platforms. Collaboration often involves brainstorming sessions with marketers to understand campaign goals, target audiences, and key messages. You'll give and receive feedback during creative reviews, adjusting copy to fit visual layouts and campaign strategies. This cross-functional teamwork helps create compelling, cohesive content that drives engagement and achieves campaign objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a social copywriter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Social Copywriter, you need strong writing skills, creativity, and a solid understanding of social media trends and brand voice, usually supported by a degree in marketing, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with social media management tools like Hootsuite or Sprout Social, as well as basic analytics platforms, is often expected. Outstanding collaboration, adaptability, and the ability to write concise, engaging copy under tight deadlines are crucial soft skills. These competencies enable effective brand messaging, audience engagement, and measurable results in a fast-changing digital landscape.

What is the difference between Social Copywriter vs Content Writer?

Skills NeededSocial media trends, concise writing, platform-specific knowledgeResearch, detailed writing, SEO optimization
Work EnvironmentSocial media teams, marketing agencies, digital departmentsContent marketing teams, editorial departments, freelance

Understanding these differences helps employers and job seekers target the right skills and roles in digital marketing.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Social Media Copywriter will support Future Caucus' communications team, producing polished, on-brand social media copy that amplifies the organization's video content, earned media coverage, and the stories of young lawmakers across the country.

This individual will play a key role in extending the reach of Future Caucus' content across X, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Facebook. The contract includes a focus on writing captions for video content, including identifying multiple social-friendly clips from long-form videos for staggered publication, and drafting posts that promote Future Caucus' earned media coverage, events, initiatives, and public engagements.

The ideal contractor is an experienced, versatile copywriter with a demonstrated ability to learn and adapt to an organization's voice, producing publication-ready copy with limited revision. This contract is best suited to an established professional who works independently, manages their own time effectively, and consistently delivers high-quality work on deadline. A working knowledge of U.S. politics at the federal and state level is essential.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Write social media captions for Future Caucus video content across X, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Facebook, in alignment with the organization's brand voice and content calendar
  • Review long-form video content to identify short clips for social media
  • Draft social media posts promoting Future Caucus' earned media coverage
  • Participate in voice-development exercises with the communications team to help refine and codify Future Caucus' brand voice
  • Ensure all copy adheres to AP style and Future Caucus style and brand guidelines
  • Proactively communicate progress on key deliverables with the Senior Manager, Digital Content, and be responsive within 1 day of communications.

Requirements

ABOUT YOU

  • 4+ years of professional copywriting experience, ideally including social media copy for organizations, campaigns, or brands
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating versatility — you've successfully written in multiple organizational voices and can point to examples
  • A track record of producing clean, publication-ready copy that requires minimal editing
  • Excellent command of major style guides, with an emphasis on AP style
  • Genuine interest in and working knowledge of U.S. politics at the federal and/or state level
  • Self-directed and highly organized: you manage your own workload, hit deadlines without prompting, and communicate proactively
  • Experience with brand or voice development is a strong plus
  • Passion for bipartisan cooperation and cross-partisan dialogue

OUR VALUES

In 2020, Future Caucus unveiled a set of organizational value statements developed collaboratively by our team. This ethos represents what we believe in at Future Caucus, and what we have worked to establish during the last eleven years. • Empower Others: Be empathetic — practice transparency and collaborate openly
  • Break Barriers: Climb it, go through it, or work around it — limits are challenges to overcome
  • Innovate Freely: Disruption leads to creative solutions — forge a new path forward
