Job Summary

College Police Dispatcher is a non-sworn, critical role responsible for answering emergency lines (campus emergency number 5555) and business lines, operating radio communications, and monitoring security/fire alarms. They utilize Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) systems to prioritize incidents, dispatch campus police, security officers, emergency services, and update logs. They often manage mass notifications through the college's RAVE system.

This is a casual, non-benefitted position.

Pay for this role is typically between $18.76-$22.93 hourly covering the middle half of market compensation. Actual compensation will vary based on individual qualifications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Emergency Communications: Answer emergency and non-emergency calls, obtaining critical information, and dispatching police, fire, or medical units.

  • Alarm/Camera Monitoring: Monitor security, intrusion, card access, and fire alarm systems. Periodically monitor numerous security cameras.

  • Data Entry/Records: Log incidents into our CAD system.

  • System Inquiries: Perform CJIS (Criminal Justice Information Systems) queries for license, warrant, or criminal history checks.

  • Public Interaction: Handle walk-in requests for assistance at the police department.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written skills, with the ability to maintain composure during stressful, high-pressure situations.

  • Technical Proficiency: Ability to operate radio systems, CAD software, and Microsoft Office. Be able to attain DCJIS certification.

  • Certifications: While not required - EMD (Emergency Medical Dispatch) and APCO PST1 certifications, or the ability to obtain them is helpful.

  • Background Check: Must pass a thorough background check.

  • Availability: Must be able to work varied shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays as this position is for an on-call member (casual position with Smith College).

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.

  • Previous experience in public safety, security, or customer service.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Good customer service skills

  • Ability to work in a fast paced, multi-tasked environment

  • CAD knowledge

  • DCJIS certification

  • APCO certification
