What are smart systems?

Smart systems are technology-driven solutions that use sensors, software, and data processing to automate tasks, make decisions, and improve efficiency. They often incorporate artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things (IoT) to collect and analyze data from their environment. Examples include smart home devices, intelligent transportation systems, and automated manufacturing. These systems are designed to adapt to changing conditions and learn from experience, resulting in smarter and more responsive operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a smart systems engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Smart Systems Engineer, you need a solid background in systems engineering, embedded systems, IoT technologies, and typically a degree in electrical, computer, or systems engineering. Familiarity with programming languages (such as Python or C++), automation platforms, and smart device integration tools is essential, along with relevant certifications like Cisco CCNA or IoT-focused credentials. Strong problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and effective communication set top professionals apart in this multidisciplinary field. These skills are crucial for developing, integrating, and maintaining intelligent systems that optimize efficiency and innovation in various industries.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in smart systems roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Smart Systems roles often encounter challenges such as integrating diverse hardware and software components, ensuring system security, and managing large volumes of data. Collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams—such as data scientists, engineers, and IT specialists—is crucial to address these challenges. Staying current with emerging technologies and industry standards also helps in developing robust and scalable smart systems. Continuous learning and proactive problem-solving are key strategies for overcoming these obstacles and advancing in the field.

What is the difference between Smart Systems vs Automation Technician?

AspectSmart SystemsAutomation Technician
Required CredentialsTypically a degree in engineering, computer science, or related field; certifications in smart technology or IoT are commonVocational training or associate degree; certifications in PLC programming, control systems, or automation are common
Work EnvironmentDesign, install, and maintain integrated smart technology systems in buildings, homes, or industrial settingsInstall, troubleshoot, and repair industrial automation equipment and control systems in manufacturing or processing plants
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by tech firms, building management companies, and industrial facilities focusing on IoT and smart infrastructureEmployed by manufacturing, processing, and industrial companies focusing on automation and control systems

Smart Systems professionals focus on designing and managing integrated intelligent systems, often involving IoT and smart technology. Automation Technicians primarily install and maintain industrial control systems. While both roles require technical skills, Smart Systems roles tend to involve more design and integration, whereas Automation Technicians focus on hands-on troubleshooting and repair.

Job Purpose

The BorgWarner Arden campus offers two world class technical centers and a cutting-edge manufacturing facility that designs and produces turbos, fan, and fan drive components for the automotive industry. The Arden campus offers a multitude of career opportunities and is in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina.

The Smart Manufacturing team drives the future of connected, data-driven production, delivering secure and scalable solutions across MES, Industry 4.0, IIoT, and digital transformation. We connect machines, systems, and data across our global production sites to enable real-time visibility, standardized digital capabilities, advanced analytics, and continuous productivity improvements - working closely with manufacturing, engineering, logistics, IT, and business stakeholders to reduce complexity, uphold global standards, and accelerate adoption of smart manufacturing technologies.

Reporting to the Manager Smart Manufacturing IT, this role translates manufacturing requirements into functional designs, configurations, integrations, test plans, and support models for scalable MES, IIoT, and smart manufacturing solutions. It bridges manufacturing, IT, and business stakeholders to enable data-driven operations, secure OT/IT integration, and measurable gains in productivity, flexibility, resilience, and sustainability - with an eye on where the smart factory is heading, not just where it is today.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the design, rollout, and continuous improvement of a global smart manufacturing / IIoT platform connecting machines, systems, and data across production environments.
  • Partner with international, cross-functional teams to define scalable digital standards, reusable solution patterns, and integration frameworks for Industry 4.0 and IIoT.
  • Identify and evaluate high-value digital use cases - production optimization, logistics, predictive insights, energy efficiency, and data-driven decision support
  • Lead assigned solutions and projects end to end, from concept to handover: planning, estimation, delivery tracking, and management of risks, scope, dependencies, and change requests, with regular updates to stakeholders and steering committees.
  • Analyze, design, and standardize global target processes, data flows, and digital tools together with local production, logistics, engineering, and IT organizations.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies - IioT integration, edge/cloud connectivity, industrial data architecture, and analytics/AI enablement - to strengthen future smart-factory capabilities and keep solutions extensible (e.g., digital-twin- and analytics-ready)
  • Ensure stable day-to-day operation of smart manufacturing systems while introducing innovative services and embedding digital-lean principles into future solutions
  • Develop technical specifications, perform IT testing, and create documentation and end-user training, so systems are adopted correctly and meet business needs
  • Identify, shape, and help deliver AI/ML and advanced-analytics use cases - e.g., predictive maintenance, anomaly detection, vision-based quality, and AI-assisted decision support - translating them from concept into scalable, production-ready solutions.
  • Train, coach, and build digital competencies among IT and business stakeholders across the domain.

What we are looking for

  • Bachelor's degree in information systems, Computer Science, Manufacturing/Industrial Engineering, or related fields
  • 3+ years of professional experience in consulting or industry (automotive/manufacturing preferred) across IT, engineering, production, and/or logistics - including hands-on implementation and support of Industry 4.0 technologies and business digitalization
  • Solid understanding of Industry 4.0 and digital manufacturing solutions - familiarity with SAP, MES, and IIoT platforms, plus awareness of edge/cloud, analytics, and industrial data architecture
  • Self-starter, open to innovative ideas, able to prioritize across multiple projects, work to tight deadlines, and adapt to changing priorities
  • Ability to deliver IT solutions that meet business needs within budget and timelines in a global organization
  • Fluent English (additional languages a plus); willingness to travel up to ~30%

What we offer

All positions start at an above market pay rate for that position. Benefits are also above market and include the below for all fulltime employees:

  • Day 1 Medical Coverage with potential of no monthly premium
  • Onsite Health Clinic for employees and dependents (age 14 and over) at no cost
  • Dental, Vision, Life, AD&D, and Disability Coverage
  • Tuition Reimbursement Program after 18 months
  • Retirement Savings Plan (401k) with a matching program
  • Company paid holidays and vacation starting Day 1
