WHAT YOU WILL DO EVERYDAY

The Head of Small Business Banking is the senior leader responsible for establishing and launching our new Small Business Banking division and then leading its long-term growth and performance. This leader owns the segment P&L and drives growth across deposits, lending, payments, and digital services. The role combines product innovation, fintech/API integration, digital customer acquisition, and real-time payments modernization to deliver a best-in-class, advisory-led experience for small to mid-size businesses.

This leader will revamp deposit product offerings, deploy digital and mobile cash-flow tools integrated with accounting systems, and oversee the small-business lending function, including systems and personnel, within our branches while accelerating online membership and loan volume in existing and new markets.

Direct Reports: Manager Small Business Lending, Small Business Deposit Specialist

HOW YOU WILL MAKE AN IMPACT

25%            Set the strategic vision, three-year roadmap, and annual operating plan for SMB Banking. Own segment P&L (revenue, costs, investments) and define market expansion strategies (geography and verticals). Establish KPIs, dashboards, and additional success measures. Oversee the Small Business Lending manager directly and lenders indirectly through setting the vision and plan of execution of the strategy.  Model hands-on leadership for your team, ensuring we are recognized as trusted advisors and partners to small business owners.

20%            Lead product innovation across deposits and payments: revamp SMB deposit portfolio (bundles/suites, earnings credit, analysis, interest-bearing), and modernize payments (FedNow/RTP adoption, request-to-pay, invoicing). Research, select, and deploy digital cash-flow tools and mobile services that integrate with business members accounting software. Oversee the Small Business digital platform process and experience, understanding the end-to-end business account origination platform and desired enhancements.

15%            Oversee small-business lending end-to-end: business credit card programs, credit policy and procedures, underwriting oversight, loan origination system (LOS) strategy, portfolio monitoring delinquency management, credit risk rating, and quality assurance in documentation and closing. Provide strategic oversight and accountability for the LOS and process training, with the Small Business Lending Manager responsible for delivering training to branch and lending staff.

10%            Own the digital customer acquisition strategy and online lending funnel. Partner with Marketing on SEO/SEM, content, and campaigns; improve conversion, time-to-decision, straight-through processing, and digital brand positioning for SMB. Additionally, partner with Virtual Branching to influence and guide standards and practices for onboarding new businesses. Provide strategic oversight of risk controls, vendor performance, and program governance to maintain regulatory compliance and mitigate operational risk.

10%            Build a data strategy for SMB segmentation, lifecycle management, and personalized next-best-actions. Deploy AI-powered insights (cash-flow projections, alerts, embedded advice) and train staff to use AI responsibly to deepen member relationships.

10%            Serve as the face of Interra’s small business banking in our local communities, regularly engaging with Main Street businesses, chambers of commerce, and local business associations to understand their needs and advocate for their success.

5%               Partner with Compliance and Risk to uphold ECOA/Reg B/UDAAP/BSA/AML/OFAC/Reg E/FCRA and evolving privacy standards. Oversee governance and compliance for third-party vendor relationships and program execution, ensuring alignment with the organization’s Enterprise Risk Management framework.

5%               Design the SMB Banking organization and hire key roles. Foster a high-performance culture focused on member service, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Provide coaching, mentorship, and performance management for all direct reports and support branch training on SMB solutions.
