Job Summary:
The Department of Surgical Sciences at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine seeks applicants for a position as a Clinical Assistant or Associate Professor, or Clinical Professor in Small Animal Oncologic Surgery. The Oncologic surgery service is part of a multidisciplinary, integrated Oncology service that consists of 1 surgical oncology faculty, 4 medical oncology faculty, 3 radiation oncology faculty, 6 medical oncology residents, 4 radiation oncology residents, one clinical trials intern, and 8-10 designated veterinary technicians. The successful candidate will join a surgical team comprising one other dedicated oncologic surgeon (an ACVS Fellow in Surgical Oncology) and six other ACVS Diplomates in Small Animal Surgery (three dedicated Soft-Tissue surgeons, one Soft tissue/Orthopedic surgeon and two dedicated Orthopedic surgeons), providing surgical care to patients within the UW Veterinary Care hospital. The Oncologic Surgery service is typically staffed with 1 faculty member, 1-3 house officers, fourth-year veterinary students, and 1-2 dedicated veterinary technicians.
This position will add to our existing team, to enhance access to integrated oncologic care for small animal cancer patients. Together, the Soft-Tissue, Surgical Oncology, and Orthopedic Surgery services support our current group of 10 small animal surgery house officers. Major responsibilities of this position include clinical service, classroom, laboratory and clinical teaching, research, and service. Participation in emergency and after-hours clinic duty, didactic and laboratory teaching of veterinary students, house officer training and service to the department and school is shared amongst small animal surgeons as appropriate.
Appointment may be made in the Teaching, Clinical, or Tenure track as appropriate to the candidate's background, experience, qualifications and career goals.
Key Job Responsibilities:
Clinical responsibilities:
- Management of oncologic surgery cases presented to the UW Veterinary Care hospital.
- Collaboration with other clinical services within the hospital as needed to provide excellent
patient care (e.g. Emergency and Critical Care, Diagnostic Imaging, Medical Oncology, Radiation
Oncology, Cardiology, Internal Medicine, Dentistry and Oromaxillofacial Surgery, Anesthesia and
Pain Management, Dermatology, Special Species / Zoological Medicine, Neurology, and Clinical
and Anatomic Pathology).
- Consultation with referring veterinarians regarding follow-up care for patients treated at UW
Veterinary Care or for general advice on soft-tissue and oncologic surgery cases.
- Equitable participation in emergency and after-hours coverage when on clinic duty.
Teaching responsibilities:
- Teaching of preclinical veterinary students in various didactic and laboratory courses, with
opportunities to engage in curricular development and innovation.
- Clinical instruction and training of fourth-year veterinary students when participating on Surgical
Oncology service and multidisciplinary Oncology service.
- Clinical training of surgical and rotating interns when participating on the Oncologic Surgery
service.
- Clinical training and mentoring of surgical residents enrolled in the ACVS training program.
- Consultation with referring veterinarians and provision of continuing education at the local,
regional, national, or international level.
Research responsibilities:
- Conduct research (e.g. basic science, clinical, or teaching related) and publish results of scholarly
activities.
- Establishment of intramural and extramural funding for research.
Service responsibilities:
- Participation in various administrative committees at the hospital, department, school, and
campus level.
- Participation in various professional organizations and outreach activities.
The approximate allocation of responsibilities:
40-60% in Clinical Practice (20-30 weeks/year of clinic duty)
10-15% Teaching (in addition to clinical teaching)
10-40% in Research
5-15% in Service

Required Qualifications:
-American College of Veterinary Surgeons Board Certification, or Board Eligibility at the time of start date may also be considered. An individual with European College of Veterinary Surgeons Board Certification may also be considered. Candidates must be fellowship trained in surgical oncology (ACVS Fellow, Surgical Oncology) or have expected completion of a surgical oncology fellowship prior to the start date (Fellow candidate, Surgical Oncology). ACVS Fellowship trained ECVS diplomates will be considered.
