What is SkillBridge?

SkillBridge is a Department of Defense (DoD) program that allows active-duty service members to gain civilian work experience through internships, apprenticeships, or fellowships during their last 180 days of service. The program partners with private and public sector organizations to provide training and hands-on experience in various career fields. SkillBridge aims to help service members transition smoothly into the civilian workforce by building relevant skills and professional networks before they leave the military.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a SkillBridge internship?

To thrive in a SkillBridge internship, transitioning service members need a solid foundation in their military occupational specialty, relevant civilian work skills, and a strong work ethic. Familiarity with industry-specific tools, certifications, or information systems—such as project management software or technical licenses—can be advantageous. Adaptability, effective communication, and a willingness to learn help participants integrate smoothly into civilian workplace cultures. These skills and qualities are vital for leveraging military experience, building professional networks, and ensuring a successful transition to a civilian career.

How does participating in the SkillBridge program help service members transition to civilian roles within an organization?

Participating in the Skillbridge program allows service members to gain hands-on experience in a civilian workplace before separating from the military. During the program, participants work closely with company mentors and teams, which helps them understand organizational culture, civilian work expectations, and industry-specific skills. This immersive experience not only eases the transition but can also lead to full-time job offers and provides valuable networking opportunities. Employers often value Skillbridge participants for their discipline, adaptability, and leadership experience.

What is the difference between Skillbridge vs Intern?
