Can I do SkillBridge with any company?

SkillBridge is a program that allows eligible service members to gain civilian work experience through internships with partner companies during their last 180 days of service. Not all companies participate in SkillBridge, so interns should verify if the employer is a recognized SkillBridge partner and if the internship aligns with their career goals and military transition requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Skillbridge Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Skillbridge Intern, you need a strong foundation in your military occupational specialty, a solid work ethic, and a willingness to learn new civilian industry practices. Familiarity with relevant industry tools, certifications, or software—such as Microsoft Office, project management platforms, or technical certifications—can be highly beneficial. Adaptability, strong communication, and teamwork are essential soft skills for transitioning effectively from military to civilian work environments. These skills and qualities enable Skillbridge Interns to bridge their military experience with civilian career success, ensuring a smooth transition and valuable contributions to host organizations.

What is a SkillBridge intern?

A SkillBridge intern is a participant in the Department of Defense program that allows transitioning service members to gain civilian work experience through internships with private sector companies while still on active duty. These internships typically last 3 to 6 months and help interns develop skills, certifications, and industry knowledge relevant to their career goals.

What are the typical responsibilities and learning opportunities for a Skillbridge Intern during their internship?

As a Skillbridge Intern, you will typically be assigned to real-world projects that align with your military experience and career interests. You’ll work alongside civilian professionals, participate in team meetings, and gain hands-on exposure to industry tools and practices. The internship is structured to provide mentorship and feedback, helping you transition smoothly into the civilian workforce. You may also have opportunities to network, attend training sessions, and showcase your skills, which can open doors to permanent employment after the program.

Does SkillBridge get you a job?

SkillBridge is a program that allows service members to gain civilian work experience through internships with industry partners. While participation can improve employment prospects and provide valuable skills, it does not guarantee a job afterward, but many interns secure employment or connections through the program. Success depends on individual performance, industry demand, and networking efforts.
